Uber promised South Africans better lives but knew drivers risked debt and danger, promising to empower a new breed of independent entrepreneurs. The Uber Files, however, show that executives made decisions that imperiled the financial and physical health of drivers to achieve their own success.

Some drivers say they are worse off than when they started because Uber made policy decisions that deprived them of their ability to earn a living and heightened the risks of driving in some parts of the world.

Uber drivers faced particular peril after the company began allowing cash payments — a move the company once opposed as too dangerous — as it sought to expand its customer base to South Africans who used traditional taxi services and may not have had credit cards. Drivers became more vulnerable to robberies and attacks, but many chose to keep working for Uber because, in a country where one in three adults are unemployed, they had few other options.

The Washington Post’s Douglas MacMillan talks about how the company enticed drivers in the developing nation with lucrative subsidies, then undermined these workers with policies that made their jobs more perilous.

This is so dumb… if they aren’t making money driving for Uber they just shouldn’t drive for Uber… it’s not complicated. This more speaks to the fact that budgets are not being made and these individuals are not doing the math on the profitability of driving… this isn’t an Uber problem

The ride share and delivery apps try to hook new drivers with incentives. People take these jobs due to lack of jobs and better schedules. As a consumer, I benefit greatly from Instacart and Lyft. But their workers are contracted and assume all the risk. Fuel, car maintenance, safety. Working outside the US in countries that are cash based with high crime only makes things worse. No matter where these companies take on work, they are taking advantage of the contracted worker.

Ummm…. Cape Town is not the only place this happened. San Francisco was like the wild Wild West!!! Almost got jumped by a shuttle bus driver near SFO (as a single mom by a giant man), was run off the road by another shuttle bus driver in the actual SFO drop off area, was targeted by police with a car full of passengers, had my rental car towed off the street in the middle of a shift 90 miles away from my house at 11pm due to an error in their billing g department and had to stay in an Air Bnb they refused to compensate me for (and then had the car returned the very next day when they realized it was their own error), was treated like absolute trash by techies… give me a break. This is their world-wide modus operendi. Please stop protecting them.

I’ve never used Uber or Lyft and I never will. If I’m in a situation where I need a ride, I’ll gladly pay for a taxi. I usually only use taxis in NYC when we’re visiting and using the train or walking will take too long.

Really they didn't know how to understand the benefits and drawbacks of a job before taking it? 🤦If they don't like it they are free to quit correct? No one is forcing them to work! How is this the company's fault! This is the problem of their citizens for not controlling their own crime.

i remember watching a documentary on the south Africa taxi unions, taxi drives would get shot and killed if they was operating their taxi outside of their agreed upon route then there was the white only union… these guys put a huge target on their back OR Uber will finally get rid of the taxi unions and the grip they have on south Africa..

  17. Wrenlin Whitelight says:

Doesn't sound like Uber's fault necessarily. This type of business model cannot work if the general public is torn with crime. It feels to me like Uber can only operate in 1st world countries in places with low criminal behavior.
12 hours/day with all that risk, what a heart breaking nightmare.

News Flash – Steve Bannon thinks Trump is the current President and that he is employed by the White House….why else does he want to testify? To have executive privileges you have to be employed by the White House and only the current president can waive those executive privileges.

Steve Bannon pleads to be able to testify, but he committed his crime already so he will go to jail.

Cipollone does not dispute Trumps illegal activities…..Trump to be indicted soon…

Cipollone was Trumps White House lawyer and has NOW testified under oath to convict Trump.

Trumpist making deadly threats and trying to intimidate witnesses!

Trumpist gunmen will continue because Trump has never been punished for his crimes…..they see no Law and no Order. Arrest Trump and save our kids!

Trump attacked his secret service agent. Secret Service Agents asked to testify UNDER oath!

Trump vandalized the White House, destroyed White House property in fit of rage and stole secret documents.

FBI seized John Eastman for criminal activity and now has his cell phone

Ron Johnson lies about his seditious conspiracy efforts.

Mo Brooks, Matt Gates,Scott Perry,Louis Gohmert, Andy Biggs,Paul Gosar, Marjorie Taylor Greene, John Eastman admits guilt….all by asking for pardons!

Everyone knows, if you ask for or accept a pardon you are admitting guilt! A pardon is for a crime committed.

Trump willfully mounted the insurrection and violate conspiracy statute 18 U.S.C. § 371 of the criminal code. Trump also stole secret documents from the White House.

Attorney General Merrick Garland plans to arrest Trump and his leadership team!

Steve Bannon Arrested, Guilty and Indicted! All appeals denied by courts and his trial starts in July 2022.

Proud Boys Leader Henry “Enrique” Tarrio is arrested for seditious conspiracy
Proud Boys – Pezzola arrested for seditious conspiracy
Proud Boys – Ethan Nordean, of Seattle, arrested for seditious conspiracy
Proud Boys – Joe Biggs, of the Daytona Beach area arrested for seditious conspiracy
Proud Boys – Zachary Rehl, of Philadelphia arrested for seditious conspiracy

Peter Navarrow Arrested, Guilty and Indicted! Trial date 11/17/2022

    Dan Scavino Guilty and Contempt
Civil Contempt For Trump Is Pending
Civil lawsuits For Trump Are Pending
Jail Time For Trump Is Coming: he stole white house documents and gifts to America from foreign officials.
Loudermilk is a Trumpist Insurgent. He lead Trumpists into the Capital and then denied it.

Support for Trumpism is support for more mass shooting

No person is above the law! Listen to former DOJ Eric Holder, you can and need to prosecute Trump.

since January 6 2021 not one single Republican lawmaker has been held accountable for their insurrection actions. they will win re-election if not arrested and they will cause more chaos and mass shootings. Put an end to the evil Trumpist Republicans and support the good Republicans and good democrats.

MAGA Trumpists are ramping up their war machine to lie about their insurrection! Dont believe the lies!
    .

We need to support a federal law mandating prison time for each lie told by an elected official.
    .

    More Very Disturbing Trends –

1 Law enforcement has NO OBLIGATION TO HELP ANYONE…that is what their Union will fight for during investigations and trials.

2 Law enforcement cant be prosecuted for Not doing their jobs

3 Law enforcement can legally lie unless they are under oath at that moment

4 The District Attorney will side with the cops almost always

5 Law enforcement has qualified immunity, which makes it very difficult to prosecute them

Texas Shooting Coverup …..over 18 armed evil trumpist c o p s had over 11,000 live rounds of ammo and they waited. and waited…..while people were being killed. it took the border patrol to take out the shooter…. how sad is that?

nothing will happen to these evil trumpist people unless the locals keep up the pressure and the cops and politicians involved leave!
    .
    .
Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.
