She has a bone to choose with these products.
Nutritionist Claire Sorlie is spilling the tea on the 2 “health foods” she believes are overrated — collagen powders and probiotic supplements — and 4 she finds underrated — bone broth, raspberries, sauerkraut, and Sleepytime tea.
“Items your grocery list does & doesn’t need!” Sorlie captioned her TikTok, which has captured greater than 40,000 views because it was posted this month.
First on the list are collagen powders, that are intended to spice up skin elasticity, make hair shinier, and strengthen bones, amongst other improvements.
“Don’t get me unsuitable, there are some good collagen powder brands,” Sorlie explained. “I just present in my clinical experience that my clients recuperate results with things like their hair, skin, nails, joint health after we use a whole-food source of collagen versus a powdered form. Additionally they are inclined to be highly processed, have weird, funky additives, [and] can contribute to gas and bloating.”
Sorlie as a substitute recommends bone broth, a collagen-containing liquid created from boiling animal bones and connective tissue.
She prefers Bonafide Provisions Organic Bone Broth for its “easy ingredients” that “taste amazing.”
Also underrated are raspberries, which “have a good amount of fiber,” Sorlie said.
One cup of red raspberries is claimed to contain 8 grams of fiber.
The Food and Drug Administration recommends consuming at the very least 28 grams of dietary fiber a day.
On the overrated list are probiotic supplements to assist with gut health and digestive issues.
“There are very specific instances where I exploit probiotic supplements with my clients,” Sorlie noted. “But when we’re just attempting to get a every day dose of probiotics, food sources like sauerkraut are a a lot better option and sometimes contain more strains of probiotics.”
“Don’t have to devour quite a bit — with sauerkraut, you may start with only one teaspoon per day,” she continued. “Sauerkraut is something that may contain pre- and probiotics [and] tends to be slightly bit cheaper.”
But buyer, beware — a 2014 evaluation of sauerkraut studies found that while the fermented cabbage boasts “quite a lot of useful effects on human health … it may well also cause some unwanted and even allergic reactions.”
And eventually, Sorlie is a fan of Sleepytime tea.
