Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday backed an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
“Today I’m directing our House committee to open a proper impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. This logical next step will give our committees the total power to collect all of the facts and answers for the American public,” McCarthy said at a press conference.
An impeachment inquiry would give House Republicans more power to research allegations that Biden profited from his son Hunter’s business dealings while he was vice chairman.
Senate Republicans are skeptical that the House has enough evidence to justify an impeachment inquiry.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, the rating Democrat on the oversight committee, called the GOP investigation “a whole and total bust” in an announcement Monday.
“The voluminous evidence they’ve gathered, including hundreds of pages of bank records and suspicious activity reports and hours of testimony from witnesses, overwhelmingly demonstrates no wrongdoing by President Biden and further debunks Republicans’ conspiracy theories,” Raskin said.
