Best Buy said Friday that it’s shedding a whole lot of store employees across the country as more of its shoppers buy online and sales of consumer electronics weaken.

A spokesperson for the corporate confirmed the layoffs, but declined to share the particular number. The news was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The retailer framed the job cuts as a shift in its priorities, saying Best Buy plans so as to add hundreds of customer-facing employees and put money into growing areas, akin to its Totaltech membership program and its health business.

As of the tip of January, Best Buy had greater than 90,000 employees within the U.S. and Canada. That is a drop from the nearly 125,000 employees that it had in early 2020, in response to company financial filings.

The roles market within the U.S. stays strong and labor market continues to be tight. The unemployment rate was 3.5% as more people got back to work after the Covid pandemic, in response to the recent jobs report from the Labor Department.

Yet retailers, including Best Buy, have struck a cautious tone as shoppers pull back in some categories like consumer electronics. Retailers have seen softer sales of discretionary merchandise as consumers pay more for necessities due to inflation and spend more on services again, akin to booking flights or dining at restaurants.

Best Buy can also be following a period when a lot of its customers sprang for brand new laptops, kitchen appliances and residential theater systems throughout the early years of the pandemic. Much of what it sells are big-ticket items that folks don’t replace incessantly.

Digital sales have grow to be a more meaningful a part of its business, too. A few third of Best Buy’s U.S. sales got here from its online business within the fiscal yr that led to late January in comparison with 19% within the fiscal yr that led to late January 2020, the corporate’s CEO Corie Barry shared on its fourth-quarter earnings call. Sales made by phone, through chat or virtually have also grown, she said.

Still, Best Buy’s roughly 900 stores within the U.S. remain a crucial a part of shift: Barry said greater than 40% of online sales are picked up in stores.
