A Story of Survival in the Siberian Gulag. The host for this show is Mihaela Stoops. The guest is Katya Newton.
How can you tell someone that they will love this book, without spoiling it for them? Guzel Yakhina is a contemporary Russian author, whose books have received many literary awards. “Zuleikha” is the story of survival of a young Tatar woman that is exiled to a new settlement in Siberia, during the Soviet collectivization of the 1930’s. The drama of the characters that are stripped of all their rights, possessions and sometimes their humanity pulls us in immediately, in a way that allows us introspection on the conflicts of love and duty. As we read the book, we are enthralled with the description of places and buildings that we may be familiar with, as well as of nature and animals in the taiga. The small victories of the exiles feel like our own victories and this is why we want you to add this book to your reading list.
