Why is Europe so dependent on China’s rare earths? | DW News

Europe is extremely dependent on overseas trade for elements like cobalt, lithium, graphite, titanium and rare earth elements.

Germany and other EU countries rely heavily on imports of raw materials for use in key technologies, such as batteries, robotics and renewable energies. Often on one single supplier country like China.

China supplies 98 percent of the EU’s rare earths, which are required in wind and solar energy equipment and battery production.
Only one percent of the raw materials needed to make batteries come from the EU.

The pandemic and the war in Ukraine have made the bloc’s self-insufficience all too clear. Brussels now wants to use the Raw Materials Act – an initiative to reduce its reliance on just a few countries and make supply chains more resilient in the face of crises. That could be done by encouraging more mining and recycling of resources within the EU.

Many companies existed in the USA until 20 years ago when they were regulated so drastically they went out of business. It's very dangerous mining many of these materials. Hundreds of children in Congo are killed mining these materials with bare hands, some get buried alive digging for them to make a dollar. This is the true cost of your $1000 Smart Phone

The background graphics and photos that were used in the first 1:20 of the video were pretty poor and did little to enhance the experience for the viewer. The graphics were particuarly poor, looked unfinished and did not help me understand the information being conveyed.

Because everything "considered" green consists of rare metals (batteries, solar panels, chips). These mines are polluting the soil in CHina, CHili etc. And once gone – gone forever.
Green parties lie if they tell you its green ro better. It is the next thing to make money, to hush people

China shall use RARE EARTH card particularly on US.
US hold nothing back, using all conceivable cards on China, with goal to KILL china.
The perceived CRIME is that China will overtake US in tech, trade, military, space, alliance, etc.
US accuses China for not following the so-called INTERNATIONAL RULES created by US for US, which China has no obligation to follow without participation in writing them.
For decades, China trades & US invades; China builds & US kills. The result is that US becomes a mafia state bulling smaller nations into submission.

For years companies in the west have been warned about becoming too dependent on China and Russia for raw materials and they ignored this. Both China and Russia were very much aware of this and it was part of their strategy. It gave Russia the confidence to invade Ukraine thinking their would be very few repercussions and China hoped it would allow it to do the same with Taiwan and intimidate other countries around the world. Unfortunately for them, it hasn’t worked out that way. Russia seriously miscalculated the Ukrainian and west’s responses. The war is going on month 4 and Russia has lost thousands of troops and suffered innumerable material losses not to mention its economy is doing a nose dive. China is not happy with because they expected this war to be a cake walk. No doubt China could invade Taiwan and take over the country, but the repercussions would be so great that the CCP’s power could be greatly undermined and Xi might see himself in a very unfavorable position. Add to that China’s xenophobia and racist attitude towards anyone not a Han will only further undermine its efforts to create a new “empire” to rule the world.
