CNBC Marathon explores if airlines are profitable, why airlines face so many delays and how new technologies can streamline airport security.

Passenger airlines are a crucial industry in the global economy, but the sector is also extremely volatile. Running a passenger airline is an asset-intensive industry with narrow profit margins. Despite the risks, the industry has experienced some periods of consistent growth, which can lull investors into a false sense of security.

Meanwhile, thousands of U.S. flights have been delayed or cancelled this year which can cost airlines tens of millions of dollars. CNBC went to the Federal Aviation Administrations Air Traffic Control System Command Center to get an inside look at how the FAA deals with increasingly severe weather situations.

And remember a time when getting through airport security was quick and easy. But after the attacks on 9/11, the TSA, or Transportation Security Administration, was created and security screenings became much more thorough. With millions of people passing through TSA checkpoints everyday, this can create excruciating long lines, especially during holiday travel. In response, Delta, JetBlue, and American Airlines are just a few of the U.S. airlines starting to test facial recognition for boarding and TSA checkpoints.

So many restrictions as USA have for planes and for borders crossing, don't have any country in the world. And you complaining about problems with aviation. 🙂 In Europe already no restrictions about COVID, and in US and Canada still.

The airlines should reframe their integral and make all the airlines 'one metal', in other words make all airlines World Class and Award Winning inclusive of all people. Offer only low sodium food and heart healthy meals, more legroom in coach or all business class style seating, all while retaining the value of human dignity. How about human dignity and gratitude and drop all the competitive corporate narcissism? Make them all elite business class seats in the coach cabin. Decrease the amount of people on an airplane at once because it poses a safety risk and covid germ ickiness. Why not make it better? charge a nominal fee for baggage and fare the airfare ticket and baggage fees as an advanced ancillary charge so people aren't waiting in line, providing people time to accept that before arriving at the airport. I think that most people might agree to accept some sort of nominal fees for bags and pay in advance. Offer elite services to help the airlines profit more so employees can make more money. Use whole foods trading to get decent food on the planes, it costs less and there would be a lot less food waste. Put food on all flights over an hour long. Offer the customers something during their travel to help them feel welcome. You have to give some qualities in order to make a profit.

Airlines have become banks… the revenue is in booking and collecting the revenue regardless of whether the flight actually happens. So, there is no incentive to provide good service.

"The only way to stop the planet from “warming” due to greenhouse gases is to shut everything down and starve people to death, according to a new report out of England.

Academics from the University of Oxford and Imperial College London say that every airport in the United Kingdom must close; all beef and lamb must be made illegal; and all new construction must halt in order to reach “zero emissions” goals by 2050.

The only airports that would be allowed to continue operating are Heathrow, Glasgow and Belfast, and only under the condition that all transfers to and from the airport be done by rail rather than cars.

“All remaining airports must then close between 2030 and 2049 as to meet the legal commitment of zero emissions by 2050 every citizen of the United Kingdom must “stop using aeroplanes” for a significant period of time,” reports Exposé News.

On aviation, they say: “Although there are lots of new ideas about electric planes, they won’t be operating at commercial scales within 30 years, so zero emissions means that for some period, we’ll all stop using aeroplanes.

“Without flying, there will be growth in domestic and train-reach tourism and leisure.”

The report says all airports should close between 2020 and 2029 with the exception of Heathrow, Glasgow and Belfast. These would close between 2030 and 2049.

Aviation could re-start once a zero emission method of flight has been invented. “Electric planes are under development, but difficult: the limited rate of improvement in solar cell efficiency suggests that solar power will never be sufficient for multi-passenger commercial flight.

“Meanwhile, we have yet to find a sufficient breakthrough in battery development to anticipate sufficient lightweight storage.

Continuing to build structures for living in or conducting business will also need to stop in order for the United Kingdom to reach its “carbon neutral” targets, the report adds.

By 2050, all new construction will need to stop completely, and until then it will also need to be “phased out” in a similar manner to flying and eating meat. This is how the UK will achieve “Absolute Zero” emissions, which also happens to be the name of the report." https://unbate.ngontinh24.com/article/uk-government-report-states-all-uk-airports-must-close-within-the-next-10-years-beef-and-lamb-is-to-be-banned-and-construction-of-new-buildings-must-cease-in-the-name-of-climate-change https://www.transportxtra.com/publications/local-transport-today/news/62997/every-airport-and-port-must-close-for-climate–academics/

Easy answer: Look at our society, in general. Stepping into a passenger terminal is right up there with shopping at Walmart. The fact that airlines are too big now to run efficiently is icing on the cake.

@30:06 just flew this past weekend with southwest and was cancelled several times due to weather. Long story short, we were stranded in Stl and got a hotel room. Of course they wouldn’t reimburse us due to weather. However, because they flew our bags on a different flight and they were delayed a day, they gave us $200 travel voucher. Smh. The irony

Yes, they merged for better profits, poorer service, less maintenance, higher price tickets for the consumer–and extra add on charges for everything in sight. So better bring lots of cash when traveling–because it is going to cost you to fly and be at the airport. YOU might not have enough cash to even spend on vacation if you are not careful. Make sure to get a round trip ticket, as you might wind up cutting vacation short and never leave the terminal, especially if they lose your luggage!

Wow!, such a stressful ordeal. The mighty United States of America, What in the hell are you waiting for? Highspeed bullet trains !! A maglev super train in the northeast corridor. I could board in Washington DC and be in my office in new york city in an hour or less travelling at speeds of up to 350 to 375 mph. Try that in your beloved cars or on the slow and lethargic trains called Amtrak. The United States of America and bullet train technology. This would give americans another alternative to flying. But Nope, we rather throw money up into the universe. Putting a man on the moon to jump around and collect rocks. This cost 10 billion dollars. Im not going to mention the cost of all those up coming missions to mars. The United States of America needs highspeed Bullet trains….

Airlines being bailed out with tax payer ( customer's) money realizing that nobody is holding their feet to the fire when srcewing up on a continuous basis.
Why are industries not allow to fail anymore?
Next man up, if money is to be made someone will fill the void.
Bailout money used for stock buybacks.
Why aren't stockholders held responsible to bail out the companies they bought, in the first place, before coming to us?
What are the incentives for airlines to improve their performance?
So sick of this corporate welfare culture financed with our monies.
