The Democratic Republic of Congo is home to the world’s second largest rainforest. But this rainforest is in danger. Every year, DRC loses half a million hectares of its forest. That’s partly because people are cutting down trees to produce charcoal. But there could be a solution to the massive deforestation.
In Tanzania, the extensive deforestation of one island has been turned around. Located in Tanzania’s Zanzibar Archipelago, the tiny island of Kokota measures only one square kilometer and is home to several hundred people.

Two decades ago, its trees all but disappeared. But Kokota’s forests have now come back from the brink.

All foreign aid to poor nations should require that they stop deforestation by their farmers. It won't be easy, but it must be done.

DW obsession with Africa is very funny. The whole continent of Africa produces way less Carbon emissions than Germany but Africans are the ones that need to be GREEN. Please stop your foolishness.

  15. Mean & lean says:

It’s obviously because they are cutting down the trees & producing so much CO2 but they don’t care about the climate or the animals so they will just keep killing the forest till there is no forest left & then they will be playing the victim card

the people of Africa should stop whining, and start making smart decisions about their future. almost every female gives birth to 6-12 kids there, with no ability, what so ever to provide them with enough food. that's where the west is at fault. instead of letting them deal with the consequence of their decisions, the west is doing its best to support those kids, and the cycle continues.
stop giving them fishes. start teaching them how to fish. otherwise, the situation in Africa will never change

Using charcoal for cooking also causes C02, which is a radicalism of global warming argument, Claude Lévi-Strauss a French anthropologist said that people became civilized when started cook meals God of fire Prometheus' immortal liver every day eaten by Eagle. You take one big steel mill in China and coal consumption and compare it to all African charcoal consumption for meal preparation and you see that cooking has no impact on Co2 level at all.
