South Africa is grappling with a surge in gun violence. The problem was put in the spotlight after three separate shootings in one weekend left 22 people dead. In all three incidents, suspects opened fire on people in bars before speeding off in vehicles.
But even before these shootings, gun crimes in South Africa were increasing at an alarming rate. An average of 23 people are shot and killed in South Africa every day, according to the country’s annual crime statistics.

Remember a container loaded with guns was looted last year. I've heard that guns are selling as low as R500 ($35) on Facebook.

The problem started when you made it hard for honest citizens to own guns for self-defence..

I don't know why this article seems to give the impression that this is new.. Since 1994 there has been an exponential increase in violent crime. To improve anything in South Africa, change the government. That's it.. It's not that difficult to grasp

  19. Rocca - says:

The real murders per day is actually 67…. not the proud info the ANC Gov. want the world to know. Incompetent , corrupt Police, and don't forget that SA is ruled by a ANC mafia; ………🤬that's the real problem!!

the South Africa military does not use Ak47 rifle, these kinds of guns comes from our neighboring countries such Lesotho, Zim and Mozambique. Botswana is quite a strict country.

  29. Hartman Van Heerden says:

How do you get license for an AK47? Police cant reinforce the law on ealegal but the goverment will target legal license holders to take away their weapons.

  30. Rodney Schwartz says:

Problem is, some police sell the confiscated weapons to criminals

  31. Jack Fitzpatrick says:

First of all…this is a deceptive premise. The question should be: "why is there a surge in violence?" The reason is that SA is just another 3rd World cesspool.

  32. Moabi David says:

The United states is apparently experiencing this problem as well.
Gun violence increasing significantly, mass shootings increasing significantly.
    I wonder why ?
Why all of this sudden this is happening!??

  33. Izzo says:

I think a big source of these AK's in South Africa is through the borders – the problem is that South Africa doesn't have a dedicated border security force, we just use regular police. Police are great but they aren't specifically trained to screen and manage borders, we need a specially trained force with the correct equipment to scan vehicles and people crossing borders to ensure that those weapons don't come into South Africa. The police can then deal with those that already are in the nation and get rid of them

  34. Dwayze On Blaze says:

She stated that the police and security services are corrupt so how an we supposed rely on them to enforce gun laws? 🤔

  41. Allen E says:

    Gun control working huh? Lol.

  42. Ashley Naidoo says:

Are these not the guns that military intelligence gave to certain parties to destabilise the 94 elections? Has anyone watched The Bloody Miracle documentary, there were containers of guns, mostly AK47's, hand grenades and RPG's. Let's not forget a whole shipping container of ammo being stolen last year during looting.

  43. SmithGreen says:

an AK is a revolutional South Africans own AKs

  44. ramasodi Malete says:

Unemployment, joblessness an increased rich poor divide is causing this.
