Shocking police footage captures a Texas politician moments after he allegedly fled the scene of a hit-and-run automobile wreck Sunday — sprawled out on his yard appearing disoriented and intoxicated.
The bodycam footage, released by the San Antonio Police Department, shows the responding officer confronting San Antonio City Council Member Clayton Perry who’s seen laying on his side at midnight unable to take a seat up.
“Do you realize your Jeep remains to be running,” the officer asks, after walking past the vehicle sitting within the driveway with the headlights and break lights still beaming.
“Oh sh–,” Perry responds.
The officer informs Perry that his Jeep was crashed into his own garage and had been involved in successful and run that night, about two miles from his home.
A confused Perry insists he didn’t remember being involved in a automobile crash.
Multiple witnesses told police that the councilman’s Jeep crashed right into a Honda Civic around 9:10 p.m., causing major damage to the automobile, KSAT-TV reported.
The driving force of the Jeep didn’t stop, the witnesses said.
An arrest warrant was issued for Perry Thursday, and the embattled elected official turned himself in hours later.
He has been charged with failure to stop and provides information after a crash that resulted in damages to a vehicle over $200, in accordance with public records. If found guilty, he could spend as much as 180 days in jail and pay a $2,000 effective.
Earlier that night, Perry had undergone drive-thru at a BBQ restaurant, where a employee claimed he smelled like alcohol and will barely keep his eyes open, in accordance with an affidavit.
The Texas pol didn’t actually place an order and tried to offer the manager his wallet and automobile keys.
“It appears that you simply may need been driving while intoxicated,” the officer tells Perry within the clip.
“Not me,” Perry responds, before repeatedly denying that he had driven that night.
The officer then asks where he had been that night, to which the councilman laughs and quips, “Had a very good time.”
Perry also couldn’t remember his own phone number and didn’t know what time it was, in accordance with the footage.
Nonetheless, police didn’t test Perry’s blood alcohol level that night.
Mayor Ron Nirenberg told a neighborhood TV station Perry should resign if the fees against him are true.
Talking to reporters after he bonded out of jail, Perry said he had no plans to step down from office.
“I’ve already said I’m sorry for the effort,” Perry said, but refused to reply if he had been drinking that night.
