Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett got here out firing Saturday in prolonged motion during his first preseason game.
The previous Georgia quarterback went 17-for-29 for 191 yards and a touchdown pass to receiver Puka Nacua.
“I believed he did a pleasant job,” head coach Sean McVay said of Bennett’s performance, in accordance with ESPN. “There have been some tough situations, and you can see the athleticism where he escaped.”
All three of the Rams’ scoring drives were led by Bennett within the 34-17 loss to the Chargers.
“I believed there was plenty of good opportunities for him to find a way to learn from, and you can see a number of the things that excite us about him.” McVay continued.
Bennett entered early within the second quarter and immediately led a powerful 16-play, 75-yard touchdown drive.
“In that scoring drive, he was in a position to get right into a rhythm,” McVay said. “I believed he did a pleasant job of with the ability to exhaust a few of his progressions … You might see that it was a step in the suitable direction.”
Bennett agreed that his first taste of NFL motion was successful.
“I got more comfortable because the game went on,” Bennett said. “I began to play football … There’s some things to repair, but there’s some things we could be pleased with too.”
Bennett was drafted within the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft as a possible successor to Matthew Stafford after winning back-to-back national championships with Georgia, though his stock entering the draft was unknown after a public intoxication arrest in January.
However the 25-year-old got a possibility with the Rams, and he’s competing with Brett Rypien to function Stafford’s backup.
