The Donbas has become a battle of attrition with high casualties on both sides, BBC Newsnight charts the impact of the war on the Russian side from the 331st regiment’s home in Kostroma to the evolution of symbols painted on their tanks.
In April, we confirmed 39 soldiers had been killed but now BBC Newsnight estimates the total number of casualties to be between 400-500, almost half of the regiment’s strength from the beginning of the war.
Newsnight’s Diplomatic Editor Mark Urban analyses official and social Russian media to continue the story of the elite unit who are still trapped in a conflict that’s claiming more and more lives.

It is all very disappointing, by now Russia ought to have at the very least 50% of the Ukraine under its control, but alas Russia remains firmly stuck at around 20%! For a military power like Russia, we do expect a lot more; or is Russia just waiting for the opportune moment that Biden, together with his pals Boris, and Zelensky, decide themselves to enlist in order to tip the balance in favour of the West!
Every elite unit should be constantly worrying if they remain elite. Continuous training and, critically, updating of strategy and tactics is the way to stay elite.

they leave plenty of Wounded soldiers behind if they think they can't do much for them . This has been mentioned on the intercepted phone conversations. Because they bomb hospitals it probably means they don't have much use for hospitals themselves and it looks like they were using a tank as an ambulance.
