UK-based company Nothing has launched an Android phone it hopes will re-energise the smartphone market, reports BBC technology programme Click.
The distinctive-looking Nothing 1 has a translucent back featuring hundreds of light-emitting diode (LED) lights that function as notifications.
Nothing raised more than $144m (£122m) in funding to develop the handset.
Backers include iPhone designer Tony Fadell, YouTuber Casey Neistat, and gaming channel Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin.

I personally wouldn’t buy it. The only thing unique is the back of the phone with its flashing lights for notifications and calls etc but over time i would get confused who be calling me until I actually turn around the phone to see the name plus your looking at your phone screen most of the time in the first place.

I think it's BECAUSE the industry is dominated by 2 giants that keep putting out the same thing with a new face year after year (and charging a ridiculous $800-1200 per unit) that a start-up like this stands a good chance. People are always looking for something different, and with the current projected price of about $480 for a Nothing phone, in addition to running a known, stable OS like Android, I predict they'll have a hard time keeping up with demand for this phone. It's just a shame it won't be available in the U.S. I would've liked to try one.
