Nordstrom will close each of its stores in downtown San Francisco over “the deteriorating situation” in the world, becoming the newest chain business to shutter a location within the crime-ridden metropolis.
The retailer announced the closures at its Westfield Mall store and one other nearby Nordstrom Rack in a note to employees on Tuesday, stressing the downtown market in the town has “modified dramatically,” in line with KGO-TV.
“We’ve spent greater than 35 years serving customers in downtown San Francisco, constructing relationships with them and investing in the local people,” Nordstrom told impacted employees.
“But as lots of you recognize, the dynamics of the downtown San Francisco market have modified dramatically over the past several years, impacting customer foot traffic to our stores and our ability to operate successfully.”
Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW), owner of the Westfield Mall where one in all the Nordstrom stores is closing, slammed the present conditions in the town and said retailers are leaving in droves due to unsafe conditions which have dragged on, despite the corporate pleading with city officials to take motion.
The retailer said it was closing the stores attributable to the changing dynamics of the downtown San Francisco market.REUTERS
“The planned closure of Nordstrom underscores the deteriorating situation in downtown San Francisco,” a URW spokesperson said, KGO reported.
“A growing number of shops and businesses are leaving the world attributable to the unsafe conditions for purchasers, retailers, and employees, coupled with the indisputable fact that these significant issues are stopping an economic recovery of the world.”
“The present environment shouldn’t be sustainable for the community, or businesses, and we’re hopeful the City will implement the changes which can be so urgently needed.”
The Westfield Mall’s Nordstrom can be closed by the tip of August and the Nordstrom Rack on Market Street’s final day can be July 1, the San Francisco Business Journal reported.
There have been quite a few instances of companies struggling to cope with the high crime within the west coast city.
Twenty retailers have shut down stores in San Francisco’s Union Square since 2020, the San Francisco Standard reported.
