Nicolas Cage will do anything for a movie role — but perhaps not twice.
Cage recently revealed that he ate two live cockroaches while filming his 1988 comedy “Vampire’s Kiss” — and he claimed the director made him repeat the motion as a “prank.”
“I’ll never try this again,” the 59-year-old “Renfield” star told Yahoo Entertainment of his regrets. “I’m sorry I did it in any respect.”
Cage claimed on the film’s DVD commentary track that he was the one which begged for the live insects, as the unique script allegedly called for Cage to easily swallow a raw egg.
“I saw it as a business decision because when people see the cockroach go in my mouth … [they] really react,” he reportedly said.
Meanwhile, in the brand new vampire horror comedy “Renfield,” which hit theaters Friday, it was co-star Nicholas Hoult’s turn to ingest some creepy crawlers — though his experience was slightly sweeter.
“The cockroaches I got to eat on this were caramel,” Hoult told Yahoo Entertainment. “I also had crickets that were actually quite yummy; they were salt and vinegar flavored or barbecue smoky flavored.”
“[Nicholas] ate a potato bug, so he took it to a different level,” Cage added about his co-star. “[Potato bugs] are terrifying to me, and so are cockroaches.”
“The cockroaches I got to eat on this were caramel,” Hoult, who portrays Conde Dracula’s (Cage) titular servant Renfield, told the outlet.
“I also had crickets that were actually quite yummy; they were salt and vinegar flavored or barbecue smoky flavored.”
“[Nicholas] ate a potato bug, so he took it to a different level,” Cage applauded Hoult. “[Potato bugs] are terrifying to me, and so are cockroaches.”
The “National Treasure” actor continued with an interesting tackle phobias and world hunger.
“If you happen to could eliminate your fear, your phobia of eating insects, you possibly can solve world starvation,” Cage said. “High protein, no fat, excellent nutrients, abundance. They’re all over the place! But nope — not gonna occur.”
The Post has contacted reps for Cage and Hoult for comment.
Cage recently listed his top five favorite movies he’s done during a visit to “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
Spoiler alert: “Vampire Kiss” didn’t make the rankings, but did get an honorable mention from the actor, as he enjoyed the project because he “was capable of explore my more abstract dreams with film performance.”
