“People here are desperate to get back into Europe.”

SNP Commons leader Ian Blackford says Scotland would try and rejoin the EU if it became independent because “62% of those that live in Scotland voted to stay in the European Union” in the Brexit referendum.

What's the idea then, keep on having a referendum until you get the result you want to see?

  2. simon shotter says:

More Scots voted to stay in the UK than voted to stay the EU

    Brexit was on what. . . 3%
British democracy only needs one vote to swing a union.

  5. RJ Mun says:

If Scotland decides to become an independent nation, what happens if `Europe` says that they don't want them?

  6. Susanna Marker says:

That would be a very bad move. In a UK outside the EU, Holyrood and a scottish FM now have far more clout because the EU legislation is no longer distorting the legal relationship between Holyrood and Westminster. But the SNP won't talk about it.

  7. Stu Hicks says:

BLACKFORD IS WRONG. A DEMOCRATIC VOTE IN THE UK TO LEAVE THE EU WAS TO LEAVE. BLACKFORD is a belligerent undermining liar . He with Sturgeon told the SCOTTISH ELECTORATE " that the ENGLISH GOVERNMENT will pay their pensions".This shows he is a WILFUL liar. SNP are the worst political mob that are totally incompetent & are damaging the success of SCOTLAND. SCOTLAND DOES NOT HAVE A MANDATE TO HAVE A REFERENDUM. ANOTHER OUTRIGHT LIE. BY BLACKFORD. WESTMINSTER DOES SEE SENSE. BLACKFORD DOESN'T SEE SENSE OR UNDERSTAND THE LEGAL CONTROL OF THE UK IS IN THE HANDS OF WESTMINSTER.
WHAT BLACKFORD DOESNT RESPECT IS THE REASON FOR WESTMINSTER TO HAVE THE LEGAL RIGHT TO STOP LUNATIC EXTREMISTS ( SNP) DAMAGING THE SUCCESSFUL UNITY OF THE UK. SCOTLAND IS INSOLVENT if they fund their ARMY, NAVY& AIRFORCE & take their share of the NATIONAL DEBT. EU WILL NOT ALLOW a LAME DUCK INSOLVENT NEW COUNTRY into the EU. Scotland has never been in the EU so" they were not takken oot against their WELL( WILL)".

  8. Susanna Marker says:

As Jim Sillars used to say, you cannot join the EU and afterwards claim that you are an independent nation. Just switching our masters from London to Brussels, that is all it would be. No thanks.

I’ve never really experienced racism until I took a short break in Scotland – Sturgeon really has been stoking the anti English agenda.

  13. Francesco Guzzetta says:

At this moment there are 8 countries desperately trying to join European Union.
On the contrary, both in Scotland and in Ireland there are strong tension to leave the Uk.
I think this says it all…

  14. Proselytizing Orthodox Pentecostal Angora Rabbit says:

Typical SNP waffle about democracy and the right for the voters to be heard, etc. Which would be forgotten as soon as they got the result they wanted from a second, third, or forth referendum. And if leaving the EU is such a disaster for Scotland, leaving the UK will be far more damaging. But then Brexit is just the latest excuse for the SNP to argue for the continuation of their neverendum policy. EU membership wasn't important to them in 2014.

Ian your arrangement was sound and you wouldn't be looking like a complete fool now, if you hadn't have been saying for years Scotland won't be dragged out of the EU against its will, only to allow Scotland to be dragged out of the EU and then done nothing about it for years and still we have no plan from the SNP about 1 In an Independent Scotland will we have a say on EU membership by way of a referendum 2 will we be joining EFTA in the short time, Alba Party policy 3 or will we be Independent and just waiting to be full membership of the EU and not join EFTA.

  17. Miklos Kallo says:

It's just incredible how hypocritical England can be regarding this. When it was about the UK leaving EU it was all about independence being an absolute right for the people and everyone opposing that was a tyrant opressing masses of people suffering from being enslaved by "bureaucrats" (meaning not the kind of rules we, Britons created when we had our empire which, purely by coincidence favoured us slightly…). For Scotland, suddenly independence is not important at all, and definitely not a right to be excercised. Repeating a referendum seems to be terrible crime in case of Scotland (even considering the Scottish indepence referendum was held before the Brexit one, which changed everything) – but somehow it was OK for the UK to repeat the 1975 referendum in 2016. And the gall of the blonde lady talking about a narrow majority… this was just fantastic, I wonder why the Scottish guy didn't ask her about the Brexit referendum results, 51.9% to 48.1%? How was that "overwhelming majority"? Or only other referendums should have "overwhelming majority"? This looks like a gigantic double standard.
And they wonder why Scots want to leave…

If people believe in democracy they need to accept democratic decisions. Not acting like Donald Trump or saying things have changed so we need to keep having another vote until we get the answer they want to hear. Scotland has decided. This decision should be respected.

I used to be a unionist, until Brexit happened, now I support independence! However, I still hope that Scotland honours the crown, just like Canada. And also, what's all this nonsense about a hard border between the UK and Scotland?!?!? People travel from France to Germany and throughout the EU quite easily, and on a daily basis; so what's the problem, it would be a very small border in any event. And in case you're thinking that France and Germany don't count because they're both in the EU, well then lets talk about France and the UK, after all the UK left the EU and nobody said boo about there being an international, "hard", border between it and Europe, and millions of people pass over it on the daily, so I think that's your answer. I also think that Scotland should rejoin the UK if it ever rejoins the EU, which I think is rather inevitable.
