How can we improve marijuana equity in Massachusetts?
Marijuana equity was at the heart of the legalization effort here in Massachusetts, but there is still much work to be done. More equity applicants are being granted marijuana licenses, but those applicants still only represent around 5% of total licenses awarded. Steven Hoffman, former chair of the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission, and Shaleen Title, former CCC commissioner and CEO of the Parabola Center, joined Jim Braude to speak about what barriers remain in achieving greater equity in the marijuana industry and how to overcome them.
Nobel Prize winner Craig Mello on how RNA science could change our lives
Interfering RNA, which was first discovered by UMass scientist Craig Mello, can work to silence genes and ultimately treat genetic conditions. Mello won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 2006. Now, he said scientists are hoping to use it to treat debilitating central nervous system disorders. He spoke with Jim about where the science is heading and how it can change our lives going forward.
Report for America grows, sending young journalists into news deserts
Newsroom employment in the United States is down across all different platforms, but Report for America — which sends young reporters into underserved communities — is growing. Charles Sennott, president and CEO of the GroundTruth Project, said Report for America is a service program, and many young journalists feel called to serve their community amid a local news crisis. Sennott also said that the Report for the World program is expanding internationally to countries such as Nigeria and India and will grow further in Eastern Europe and Mexico.
