They think it might have been a trainwreck.
Shortly after this week’s premiere of the highly anticipated trailer for the live-action “Barbie” movie — featuring Margot Robbie, 32, as the long-lasting doll herself and Ryan Gosling, 42, as “just Ken” — fans on Twitter recalled the film’s early days, when Amy Schumer was announced as co-writer and lead doll.
The dream didn’t last long.
Three months later, in March 2017, the 41-year-old comedian revealed she had to go away the Sony Pictures project as a result of “scheduling conflicts” — which she later admitted wasn’t the complete reason for her departure.
“They definitely didn’t need to do it the best way I desired to do it, the only way I used to be serious about doing it,” Schumer claimed to The Hollywood Reporter about Sony in March 2022.
On the time, Schumer’s script was described as “a fish-out-of-water tale a few woman (Schumer) who gets kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough.”
The “Trainwreck” star reported that her vision was for Barbie to be an inventor — to which the studio allegedly requested that her invention be a high heel made out of Jell-O.
She added that studio execs gifted her a pair of Manolo Blahniks to rejoice her taking over the gig.
“The concept that’s just what every woman must want, right there, I must have gone, ‘You’ve got the improper gal,’” she recalled.
The Post has contacted reps for Schumer and Sony for comment.
“Barbie” moved to its current studio, Warner Bros. Pictures, in October 2018, and Robbie’s casting was confirmed in July 2019.
Two years later, Greta Gerwig, 39, signed on because the movie’s director.
The film’s synopsis now reads: “After being expelled from Barbieland for being a less-than-perfect-looking doll, Barbie sets off for the human world to seek out true happiness.”
Now, fans on Twitter think it’s “just slightly funny” that Schumer could’ve slipped into Robbie’s already-iconic pink heels.
“I cannot consider a logical explanation for why amy schumer almost played barbie,” one wrote.
“Remember when Amy Schumer was going to play Barbie within the Barbie Movie, rattling we dodged a bullet,” one other penned.
“Absolutely nobody else could’ve been casted as barbie (and ken) i don’t wanna hear that amy schumer nonsense anymore,” one fan commented alongside stills from the trailer.
Other users stuck up for Schumer, claiming haters couldn’t picture her as Barbie due to her body type.
The actress stated in her 2017 Netflix special, “Amy Schumer: The Leather Special,” that “I’m what Hollywood calls ‘very fat.’”
“IDK why but all those tweets about amy schumer not playing barbie smell laced with um fatphobia,” one fan argued.
“I don’t like amy schumer but she was attached to a completely different barbie project and that i don’t love that each time someone tweets this many of the replies are only appalled that she’s not attractive/thin enough to be barbie,” one other insisted.
“It’s so annoying that that is brought up any time there’s any mention of Greta Gerwig’s #Barbie bc a) Amy Schumer’s Barbie was going to be a very different movie and b) whether you want her or not, body-shaming is gross as f-ck and that’s all that tweets like this result in,” a 3rd added.
“Amy schumer wouldn’t have been great as barbie not bc of what she looks like, but bc she subscribes to the concept pink and wonder and traditional femininity can’t be traits of a robust woman,” one other weighed in.
“Barbie” hits theaters July 21. The all-star solid includes Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa, Nicola Coughlan, Alexandra Shipp, Ritu Arya, Hari Nef and more.
