We look at how the Ukraine war is contributing to an energy crisis across Europe with Greek politician and economist Yanis Varoufakis. Last week Russia announced it would not resume sending natural gas to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, blaming Western sanctions for supposed maintenance delays keeping the gas shut off. Prior to the war, Russia supplied Europe with 40% of its natural gas, but now European nations must find ways to cope with fuel shortages and soaring energy prices as winter approaches. Varoufakis says a history of market liberalization and reliance on cheap Russian gas has left the continent scrambling, in turn pushing up energy costs in the Global South as richer European countries buy up other sources of energy. “Yet again, Europe is exporting misery to the rest of the world,” says Varoufakis, a member of the Greek Parliament and former finance minister. His latest piece for Project Syndicate is “Time to Blow Up Electricity Markets.”

When I lived in Palm Springs, I had a choice between renting two houses. One was served by a private utility company and the other by a publicly owned co-op. I compared the average monthly bills for the two providers and the house served by the publicly owned co-op was 25% less even though the house was 20% more square footage. All utilities should be publicly owned, because then they are managed not for profit, but for the good of their customers.

The problem is not the "artificial market" as this man claims. This system worked fine up till now. The problem is that the supply of energy has been severely limited by the sanctioning of Russia and the lemming like abandonment of fissile fuels based on flawed science that it will prevent or curtail a climate crisis. Really asinine. In addition, Germany shut down it's nuclear power plants, nuclear being the only effective energy production that doesn't produce carbon dioxide. Self inflicted wounds.

This is the man who almost singlehandedly tanked the Greek economy and nearly got the country booted out of the EU. I don't care for his take on anything.

Price of imported gas in Austria rose since mid 2020. From a very low level. And only bit by bit. It accelerated remarkably in the second half of 2021. Dez 21 the price was 10 times higher than in July 20. And now it’s rising even further.

What on earth is Yanis on about – the only thing about renewables we need to know is that they need to be renewed. Generating power from blades and panels and driving about by batteries is far from carbon neutral – maybe 15% less when all is said and done.

  27. MIO PHX says:

Varoufakis didn't mention the insanity of the Ukraine, European and Americans in demanding unconditional surrender from Russia. Strange how he left that out when he mentioned the tragedy of the war.

  28. Rad Comrade says:

How do Yanis (other pro-renewable leftist deebs) still believe in renewables? Germany spent 500 billion euros on solar and wind, and yet, they cannot rely on their base of solar and wind power to get them through the winter. Seriously, this a wake-up call that renewables is not the solution to the climate crisis. Go nuclear or go extinct.

Colonialism came from these shores…..ask the Aztecs, Mayans, Maori, Chinese, Japanese, Mongolians, Caliphate, Zulus, Assyrians, Egyptians about that.
