It could be that one of those "bullets"/BB-Pellets from the home-made shotgun had entered Shinzo Abe's lungs.
There is no known medical procedures to fix punctured lungs.
Shinzo Abe could have died from internal bleeding inside the lungs.

He was a great man whom I did admire. I hope that he found some peace in his dying moments.

I wished he had layed down flat after the first shot, but his security were not professional cos they should have pushed him down or sheld, or cover him up, I'm so sad how they failed him, may his soul rest in peace a great man does not deserve to die this way

Out of respect for Japanese people I ask the penalty of Bushido law and he presents hara-kiri for Bushido and Japanese respect… The former president's family gets honored for the devotion of Japan to honor his death and he instills honor in his own family name because of his transgressions… In a party for Japan to honor Bushido… Drinks are on my family…and we watch integrity together… He will honor Japanese people with my request…

Are these people right in the head? Shinzo Abe was a history revisionist who denied the war crimes Japan committed against its neighbors China Taiwan and Korea. There is NOTHING to celebrate about this man. Shameful. They should try to be more like Germany and actually teach the correct history in their schools.

This is what happens when people become complacent to thing's like this actually happening. I mean even his security guards didn't even react after the first shot. I know Japan has strict laws on firearms and such, but this was a sad tragic event that could have been avoided.

Get rid of guns and you just get guys like this making guns out of duct tape. Getting rid of guns won't change anything. Going to have to get rid of matches and gasoline too, or even knifes. In the end there is no way to stop violence.

This is not an uncommon occurrence with VIPs in Japan. If the security had been more vigilant, he might have been saved…
