The wife of an ex-Astros GM isn’t holding back her thoughts on the team’s performance this season.
Someday after the Astros’ 5-3 loss to the Giants on Thursday, Gina Luhnow — who’s married to former Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow — offered a fiery response to a fan on X who asked, “How did the Astros go from seven consecutive ALCS appearances to finish dogs–t in a matter of 1 off-season?”
“Easy answer: Jim Crane fired Jeff Luhnow. Karma sucks,” Gina responded Thursday.
Houston, two seasons faraway from a World Series win, began the 12 months at a disappointing 0-4 and currently stands at 31-38, which is the fourth-worst record within the American League.
“Wow. I didn’t think my comment can be such a giant deal,” Gina wrote on X on Friday. “I do need to make clear that I’m not, in any way, ‘celebrating’ the Astros’ current struggles. Jeff and I’ll at all times root for our boys, our team.”
Astros owner Jim Crane purchased the team in 2011 and hired Jeff Luhnow, who spearheaded a rebuild of the organization, as the final manager.
Luhnow’s arrival set the organization up for fulfillment, with the franchise securing its first World Series title in 2017, together with seven consecutive trips to the ALCS — 4 of which under his watch.
Crane fired Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch in 2020 within the wake of the Astros’ infamous sign-stealing scandal.
The ex-general manager filed a $22 million lawsuit against the organization after asserting he had no knowledge of the illegal sign-stealing and had 22,000 text messages to prove it.
Despite the scandal, Luhnow has continued to thrive within the sports industry.
In 2021, he established Blue Crow Sports Group, overseeing soccer clubs across multiple leagues.
“I used to be already excited about football,” Luhnow told The Athletic in 2022. “I’d spent, you understand, 16 years in baseball. I actually enjoyed it. Football is the place for me without delay.”
Luhnow was widely acknowledged for his role because the mastermind behind the Astros’ most successful period in franchise history, and his wife isn’t afraid to make sure people keep in mind that.
The Luhnows have been married since 2012, a 12 months after he got the job with the Astros.
