There was about a 30% increase nationally in murder between 2019 and 2020, which is the largest year-over-year increase ever recorded. While there was a slight increase of about 6% between 2020 and 2021, preliminary 2022 data from big cities suggests that the murder rate may be dropping. The pandemic was a major catalyst in the rise in murder, but it’s not the only factor. Watch the video above to learn why murder rates have been rising in the U.S. and what we can do to reverse the trend.

“There was a massive surge in legal purchases of guns during the pandemic,” Abt said. “A larger share of those legally purchased guns were diverted into the hands of criminals more quickly than normal.”

There were an estimated 21 million guns sold in the U.S. in 2020, breaking the previous record in 2016 of just over 16 million guns sold. In 2021, that number dropped slightly to a little less than 19 million.

The data shows that the rising trend in murder rates occurred all across the country.

“We saw increases in violent crime across all different kinds of geographic areas in the United States,” said Anna Harvey, professor of politics at New York University. “People have also looked at partisan control of cities, and there’s no evidence at all that violent crime increased more in cities that were Democrat relative to cities that were led by Republican mayors.”

However, there is some hope that the numbers may be turning around. Preliminary big city data from the first half of 2022 suggests that the murder rate may be declining year to date.

Notice how these effete lefties highlight the victim status of black folks but wouldn't dare say that most of those gun shooting perps, at least in large cities, are young black males.

  5. Tommy T says:

I spend a lot of time hunting in rural PA, where almost all homes have guns. Those folks aren't shooting each other regularly. It's a red herring to blame the guns.

Murder rates are going up but gun laws have gotten stricter and stricter over the year? Shocking. I guess the criminals are not afraid of getting hurt when robbing unarmed victims.

  7. Skeeball says:

Black people are 12 times more likely to be victims of gun homicide than white people. Okay, but what’s the demographic that’s pulling the trigger on black people? Hint, it’s not whites, Hispanics, Asians, etc.

No mention of prosecutors being extremely soft on crime, people being let out of jail, and cops not wanting to do their job because they are afraid to look “racist?”

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

I'm no sociologist or psychologist but during the pandemic I assumed that the natural result would be a rise in all kinds of societal issues. Murder, suicide, self harm, depression, anxiety, domestic violence, etc. Whether individual or group, when their is a major traumatic life event, these are predictable outcomes. Don't let me get in the way of the media pushing a narrative though.

I've grown up in a richer neighborhood near some poorer ones that have more crime ('cause duh, people are desperate and crime is often their only option to survive) and there have been more and more shootings and shots near my block.

I've always heard about what's going on, and I've always known, even if I never actually KNEW/experienced it. (I only knew kids who did at school) But it's spreading outside of the more desperate and worse-off areas now, especially in combination with late-stage capitalism making those desperate areas larger.

Gun violence has always been a problem, and I have always thought our country is/was insane for not handling it AT ALL, but I hope that this spread of violence towards neighborhoods that have often rarely or never dealt with gun violence will open some eyes.

It's sad and stupid that people can't seem to understand the presence or concern of an issue unless it directly affects them, regardless of how many stories or videos they see and hear. (Aka, the lack of empathy fueled by hyper-individualism is stupid) But hey, maybe those on top will actually listen and get things done once it starts knocking on their door.

I was a kid before and couldn't fully grasp or do anything, but I'm an adult now and I plan to help create change. Time for those at the top to can it and listen to reality other than their wallets for a change.

If you make gun safety laws a priority, fewer people who want to commit crimes involving guns will be able to get a gun and carry it out. DUH

There are a lot of drive-bys in my neighborhood. It's always teenagers under the age of 18. I dont know what is going on with the kids lately. We've had 10 young men die in my 3-block area alone this year. 2 years ago, before Covid, it was a friendly and safe area. Once the kids were pulled out of school, crime got so much worse. I'm afraid to even walk my dogs. Stabbing has gotten worse too. It's not just guns. They also gang up on homeless people and beat/kick them to death for fun. If I see a group of teenagers, I actually cross the street. I feel like I'm living in "a clockwork orange."That's what it's like. They are all so angry.
