Jean-Gabriel Pageau did something different this offseason: He removed himself from hockey.
Not for the entire offseason, mind you. Pageau did all of the preparation needed for training camp, as at all times.
But after a season he’s acknowledged was disappointing, through which he scored just 11 goals and didn’t make his usual two-way impact, Pageau made a degree of taking a pair weeks away. He hung out along with his family. He golfed. He deprived himself of hockey so he would wish to return to it.
“Possibly that’s the load I needed, sometimes, to get off my shoulders,” Pageau said after Wednesday’s practice. “Spend summers here [on Long Island], practice and figuring out here in the summertime and practice every single day. It will possibly be rather a lot. Simply to go away, to return home, to have that for a pair weeks, golf trips, spend time with my family — I feel it was massive.”
