Russia is reportedly building up its naval forces in the Mediterranean Sea amid the ongoing Ukraine war. Russia has reportedly deployed its nuclear-powered submarine in the Mediterranean Sea since August. The Severodvinsk submarine is armed with Kalibr cruise missiles and is located at the entrance of NATO countries off the coast of Italy. Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that the US sent its patrol aircraft to search the Russian submarine on September 2. The two Boeing P8 jets reportedly focused on a small stretch of sea, flying over it in concentric circles in search of the submarine.

One of the biggest problems in the Mediterranean is that there is a lot of surface traffic (e.g. merchant ships, container ships, cruise ships, fishing vessels, etc.). This ceates a noisy underwater environment, raising the background noise level. It make it more difficult to hear a Russian (or any) submarine using passive sonar.
I suspect that NATO is not making liberal use of sonobouys. While it would make it easier to track these subs using active sonar, it is not all that good for the marine life and a lot may be required to be expended.
What I wonder, and it is highly unlikely to be confirmed, is whether the Russian nuclear subawas tailed by an American (or British) nuclear sub.
