In case you’re traveling to the U.K. as early as this week, you would possibly must apply online for a travel authorization before you go.
Starting Wednesday, the U.K. would require U.S. residents, Canadian residents and nationals from greater than three dozen other countries to have a so-called electronic travel authorization, or ETA.
Here’s what travelers must know:
What’s an electronic travel authorization?
The ETA is a pre-authorization for travelers from countries where the U.K. doesn’t require visas.
The U.K. launched this system in 2024 for visiting residents from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. On Wednesday, it takes effect for a bunch of additional countries.
Travelers will still must clear immigration upon arrival. The U.S. has similar digital authorization requirements for nationals from European Union countries, the U.K., and other countries whose residents aren’t required to have a visa to enter. Later in 2025, EU countries would require them of U.S. residents and nationals from other countries with similar criteria.
You don’t want an ETA if you have got a visa and are authorized to live, work or study within the U.K.
How do I get one?
You may apply online using the U.K.’s ETA app for Android and iPhone. It costs £10 (about $12.50) to use, and it’s good for 2 years and for visits of as much as six months. The fee is paid by bank card.
Travelers could have to upload photos of their passport and of themselves to use.
How long does it take?
Applicants could wait about three days for a call, sent via email.
What about children?
Everybody eligible for the ETA will need one, including babies and kids.
What if I’m connecting within the U.K.?
You’ll have an ETA even in the event you’re traveling to a U.K. airport for a connecting flight to a different country.
