They've forgotten the lessons of the early '80's. It starts with inflation that forces to Fed to raise interest rates. Rising rates force consumers to pull back on spending especially on big-ticket items such as cars and homes. Less spending means less sales for companies and businesses. Less sales mean less profits and the layoffs begin. The labor market isn't affected until later in the cycle. The GDP represents many sectors of the economy and when it pulls back into negative growth, it's representing those sectors that on the average are slowing down.
