On Wednesday, June 29, the Clinton Foundation, the Clinton School of Public Service, and the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum will host “The LGBTQ+ Community and the Future of the American Church,” the next installment of the Kumpuris Distinguished Lecture Series. .
Join Reverend Frederick A. Davie; Father James Martin, SJ; and Sarah Wilke for a conversation about how their faith traditions have responded to questions surrounding human sexuality, a topic that remains at the foreground of deep divisions within many of the largest Christian denominations in the United States. Frank Lockwood, Religion editor of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, will moderate the conversation.
Participants:
Frederick A. Davie, senior strategic advisor to the president at Union Theological Seminary; provides counsel on public programming; racial justice and racial equity; interfaith relations; and social justice and community engagement. He is also senior advisor for racial equity at Interfaith America (formerly IFYC), and is a commissioner with the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.
Frank Lockwood is the Religion editor of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. He previously served as the Washington D.C. correspondent and the political editor. He also served as the Religion Reporter for the Lexington Herald-Leader. His undergraduate degree is from Harvard and his law degree is from the University of Idaho.
James Martin, SJ, is a Jesuit priest, editor-at-large of America: The Jesuit Review of Faith & Culture; consultor to the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication; and author of many bestselling books, including “Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter Into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity.”
Sarah Wilke, director of global relations for the Institute for Discipleship, has built a national reputation in United Methodism as an innovator, serving in pivotal lay leadership roles in the denomination’s institutions, including CEO of The United Methodist Reporter and publisher of The Upper Room devotional. In collaboration with her family, Wilke has made her personal journey as a lesbian a part of the denominational conversation by sharing her story in the 2019 study video, “Faithful and Inclusive.”
