Australia is facing a worsening staff-shortage crisis. New data has revealed there are almost half a million jobs vacant… and those available positions are now equal to the number of unemployed. Industry groups are calling for more action from the government to make it easier to bring in foreign workers… with businesses at breaking point. For their take Sunrise is joined by Education Minister Jason Clare, and Deputy Liberal Leader Sussan Ley.

I'm a Sikh from Panjab but I prefer local Aussies to be given jobs first and then give it to foreign workers. We are fighting same problem back home where local Panjabi people got ignored and people from other states getting high paid jobs because they are high caste Hindus!!

You have HR departments that make positions impossible to fill is a big issue.

  13. Adele says:

Do they really have to keep sniping away at each other trying to score points about who's the 'wrongest', just fix stuff up where it's broken, the public saw what went down, we experienced it all, just get it sorted without wasting precious time on point scoring off each other!

    Where did those people go?

Seems like we didn't have shortage before pandemic but now even after we lifted up many restrictions, we still have shortage.

I don't think other countries offer better opportunities in general than Australia.

Drop your politically driven…profit taking vaccine mandates

  22. Russell Zacharias says:

Viewing from Canada, it always seems like one part of the equation is skewed a ridiculous degree.
Our provincial minimum wage is a bit more than half the new Australian national minimum wage, personally I am about $250 monthly gross less than what your minimum wage would get me BUT…while food and fuel prices are very similar, I am only paying roughly half what low end apartment rental is per week in Sydney and since at the lower end of the wage scales, rent makes up a disproportionate amount of monthly bills, that rent difference is HUGE.
Frankly I was a bit surprised that when ordered by cost, low to high, apartments in Sydney only seem to begin in the $500 pw area though the vacancy rate is also very very low (here it stays around 1.5%) so there is no leverage for those seeking a roof.

  23. Lucefina says:

Drop your mandates and watch the desperation for workers drop.

  24. Jean Tepea says:

The problem is (and let's be honest), most of the jobs that require staff are not "good enough" for Australian citizens and immigrants are restricted to do those jobs due to their visa work conditions. Plus, the wages are not increasing in proportion with the inflation. Life becomes very expensive and Australians need more money. My point is: do you really think a waiter even in a full time job can still afford a place with the rent going up every 6 months? Being able to go to work with the price of the fuel? Do you think is it advantageous for foreigners to come and work in Australia when a recession is just next door? The RBA by increasing interest rates is slowing down the economy and is doing a "very good job" at it!

  25. Savage Reason says:

Overseas workers = increased supply of labor. Increased supply of labor = reduced wages. Reduced wages = less spending on goods outside your means = lower inflation.

The issue is how did inflation become problem in this country? Artificial crisis created forced lock downs. Government handouts $ $ $ $ increased the supply of money in Australia. Increased money supply caused demand for goods to increase. Increased demand for goods = higher inflation. Throw supply of goods shocks around the world into the mess and you get where we are

Was the response to the 'crisis' responsible government management of tax payer resources? This isn't just a liberal problem, look at all labor states and how they handled the situation. If there were in power over the same period it would be the same or worse result

Most probably employers don't want to train people without experience. Most job ads clearly mention 'experience preferred'. Then, too much expectations on new staffs!

Switch off the Centrelink payments for the grubs! All the self-entitled, lazy tosspots that are leech our beautiful country need to be forced to do work. The economy of workers won’t be able to support an unjustified safety net for much longer.

I need a job with the FBI AND THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY. TAFE full of lies. You want us dead if we are not fair and pretty. Fat headed qp
The Cardinals👹👥👨🏿 I sent an email to Scott Morrison's office over a year ago in a track me down through another government service that contacted another government service and mental health called me and said they couldn't help me with accommodation so just the other day I sent another email to the loans department of the Premier of New South Wales Australia for accommodation I let you all know if I get a reply and what the reply is if they ever do get back to me

  45. David Ornellas says:

What's bloody disappointing is that this became a finger pointing game rather than a discussion to fix the issue!

  46. Mspeed3 says:

The government stuffed up by changing service providers so people all had to change to another provider an most have to travel to diffrent areas where there new providers are…so that's why there's a lot of jobs now…once people are used to the new system most will lose there payments anyway from the 100 point thing an need to do something
