Rutgers, UMass women’s soccer game devolves into brawl, punches fly

A Rutgers women’s soccer game become an MMA match briefly on Sunday afternoon. 

With the Scarlett Knights facing UMass in Amherst, a tense brawl broke out after a tough foul by Rutgers senior forward Gia Girman and UMass senior forward Ashley Lamond. 

The fight took place within the fifty fifth minute of what ended up being a 1-0 loss for Rutgers after Girman fouled a UMass player and when Lamond got here over to attempt to play the ball quickly after the decision.

Girman looked as if it would take exception to the tactic. 

Things quickly escalated from there with Lamond shoving Girman after which punches were thrown each ways before Girman threw the UMass player to the bottom.

Crazy scenes today in Amherst, as a fight broke out between in a game between Rutgers and UMass, with multiple punches being thrown. Gia Girman of Rutgers and Ashley Lamond from UMass were each sent off consequently.

Girman appeared to land an uppercut on Lamond while the 2 were on the bottom before players from each teams rushed in to interrupt things up. 

Lamond and Girman were each given red cards and sent out of the sport. 

Rutgers and UMass finished the sport with 10 players a bit on the sector and there have been 4 yellow cards – two on each team – in the ultimate minutes of the match. 

A spokesperson for Rutgers athletic department told the Associated Press that they were aware of the fight, but didn’t have a direct comment.

Within the Rutgers’ game recap on the school’s website, they described the incident as a “scrap.” 

UMass senior midfielder Bella Recinos scored the game-winning goal within the 81st minute of the sport. 

The red card related to the fight carries a two-game suspension, in accordance with NCAA rules.

Girman is entering her fourth yr playing soccer at Rutgers, where she has 4 goals in 59 appearances. 

Rutgers and UMass aren’t scheduled to play each other again this season, which eliminates any further potential for an additional fight between the 2 players.
