Speak about a cheeky beauty tip.
TikTok offers a plethora of nifty ways to skip a sizzling iron in your tresses — from braids and rollers to socks and robe belts — all within the name of effortless, overnight and heat-free curls.
But this spring, TikTok beauty enthusiasts are raising eyebrows by swapping damaging hair tools — for underwear?
Creator @zoreandtomek recently left style mavens on the favored social platform in a tizz — after she filmed herself wrapping her pin-straight hair around a thong like a scarf, tucking the ends under to form a pretend bob, then sleeping within the style.
By morning, the BeautyTokker removed the seamless thong from her mane and revealed loose, bouncy curls with a mermaid-like finish — to the surprise of viewers, who at the moment are jumping on the trend.
User @jazrabarnes took to the app last month to offer the thong trick a go as well, writing, “when the web says put underwear in your head to twist your hair overnight you listen.”
In her clip, the sweetness vlogger showed viewers find out how to secure the thong on one’s head with a scrunchie within the back — then cleverly slipped on a silk bonnet to lock the look in overnight.
In a follow-up video, she confirmed the hack did indeed work, calling it a “really good solution” for curling your hair when “traveling or something” — especially should you’ve got extra clean underwear in your suitcase.
She also beneficial “misting” each strand of hair with water before twisting it (not too tightly) across the thong, and clipping any loose pieces into place with barrettes.
Creator @abbyylouuuu also recounted an identical success story, captioning a recent video of herself trying out the thong curls method, “consider this your reminder to place your underwear in your head and get up with perfect curls!!”
When you prefer bikinis to thongs, @zoreandtomek also showed off the hack on Instagram using swim bottoms, wrapping her slicked-back ponytail around a clipped-in pair while sunbathing — and unveiling soft, siren-like waves.
The trend follows Pamela Anderson’s viral February 2023 moment, when she revealed to British Vogue how she at all times keeps a G-string in her Stella McCartney bag — and uses it to tie up her iconic ’90s bun.
Whether you’re twirling a thong into curls or using one to lock an updo, ditching hot tools is a significant win to your strands, as NYC stylist Brandi Voorhees told Shape.
“The essential profit to heatless curls is the general health of your hair. Over time, hot tools could cause breakage, dryness, and damage,” she told the outlet.
The hair aficionado also noted that heatless curls (whether created with a thong or one other item in your closet) are “definitely the stronger option relating to the health of your hair,” versus a curling iron.
“Although heat styling generally is a quicker, more practical method, with continued use, it could possibly damage the cuticle,” she warned.
For optimal results, thong curls work best on damp hair left in for “3 to 7 hours.”
Just make certain all the things is bone dry before removing the undies — or any no-heat tool — should you want those waves to last, Voorhees advised.
