There are some unspoken rules regarding plane etiquette — especially in terms of putting things within the overhead bins.
One plane passenger took it upon themselves to remove someone’s shoes from the overhead bin space to make room for his or her luggage — then they turned to Reddit to ask in the event that they were selfish or justified.
Within the r/AmItheAsshole forum on Reddit, the passenger who flew “on a brief distance flight with a low price airline company” shared — which has since been deleted — more details about what happened.
“This specific company guarantees cabin space while you book a certain seat and it’s not too expensive,” the unique poster wrote, being quick to say that it was an early flight they usually were hungover.
“After I got on the plane all of the front cabin spaces were taken, I kept trying to find a spot next to my seat 2A but my suitcase wouldn’t fit,” the post read.
The unique poster was feeling what most flyers have felt when overhead space is restricted for his or her carry-ons — annoyed and frustrated.
“I admit that I used to be getting increasingly more frustrated when walking down the aisle in search of an area and in addition a bit pressured because there was a line forming behind me.”
“I finally got here up in row 8 where I discovered an area that was crammed with 2 pairs of shoes,” the OP explained. “Everyone knows the principles, cabin luggage goes within the cabin and the rest goes under the seat.”
As genius as this concept may need sounded — it didn’t take long for the owner of the shoes to say something.
“Finally, someone two rows above speaks up. I then ask if he could take them out they usually respond with: ‘do you’re employed for the corporate/ are you the flight attendant.’ I selected not to reply this and took the shoes out to place my suitcase,” they wrote.
A flight attendant overhead and asked if either passenger needed help — to which they replied no.
In fact, the owner of the shoes needed to get even — so that they retaliated by hiding the opposite flyer’s bag.
“…I couldn’t find my bag — he had thrown it and hidden it in some row (undecided how because I used to be sleeping) this nice couple showed me where it was. I began yelling a bit telling him that he was a toddler and that shoes belonged in the ground.”
Sheesh.
The comment section on the post was crammed with mixed opinions on the situation.
“The shoes shouldn’t be within the overheard bin (Ew!). What form of barbarian is on the plane in sock feet and uses the baggage bin for shoes? You shouldn’t have touched the shoes, but had the flight attendant accomplish that,” wrote one user.
“Comprehensible that you simply were feeling pressured and impatient, but it’s best to have waited anyway. Tossing them was really bad form. Shoe owner should NOT have touched your bag –that was totally unnecessary. Just petty and childish. There’s no excuse for that,” that very same commenter continued.
“…You must have contacted the flight attendant instantly. Then only the opposite guy would have looked like TA but now you each do,” identified another person.
“I’m gonna go against the grain here. NTA. All of this might have been avoided if the opposite guy followed the principles. Not only that, however it shouldn’t have needed a flight attendant’s intervention, he had the chance to maneuver the shoes a second time while you asked whose they were and as an alternative he was obstinate. It’s not your fault this guy was clueless. He deserved to have his stuff moved,” read one other comment.
