After offering deep discounts and incentives at the height of the pandemic, now New York City landlords are jacking up rents, pushing out many tenants. New York City’s pandemic rent deals initially sounded like a good idea for many. But as the deals expire, many renters are being priced out of their apartments. New Yorkers are now paying the price of what were known as pandemic-era deals, according to a new report from StreetEasy. The report found that 44% of Manhattan’s inventory was likely made up of tenants being priced out. The Real Deal reporter Sasha Jones called the city’s real estate market a “pressure cooker.” Jones said the rental market is showing no signs of slowing down, forcing some renters to look for affordable units outside of Manhattan. But rents are rising there, too. StreetEasy reported a 9% decrease in available units in Queens from the previous quarter. The report also found that the median asking rent in Queens rose to $2,600 by the end of Q2, a 13% jump from the end of Q1.

New Yorkers are buffoon voters who continue to rubber stamp the problem (Democrats) every single election cycle.

STUPIDNESS! Many people with money around the world want to live in New York City. Give them very easy requirements to immigrate to NYC and that city will grow up in population.

The people who got a really good deal and thought that it would last forever is unrealistic.

Had the pandemic not occur, you would have never been able to move into the city.

When society operates from a profit before people, the people suffer.

We need to figure out a way how we can provide everyone with at least the basics so they can survive.

We need to rethink how we want society to be like.

Every problem that you see can be traced back to money or profit.

Literally all problems. When there's inequality, these are some of the symptoms that you see

“We have landlords who gave up rent for a year and are now seeking to recoup that rent…” yes as they should!! Do you have any idea how expensive it is to maintain an apartment building??? That’s their income/livelihood! Good on the landlords for working on getting their lost and stolen money back!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

SHOCKING…the “pandemic eviction relief” plans are backfiring now?! THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GET “GOVT RELIEF” so now landlords nationwide have skyrocketed rents to make up for all the people who stayed for FREE months or years 🤷🏼‍♀️ it’s not just NYC it’s everywhere nationwide.

My husband and I, gave up on having a wedding because the wedding is considered a "luxury" thing now. just renting a small venue is literally 20k and up. instead, we bought a place. A lot of people made fun of us because the interest rate is the highest right now. although we did lock in at 5.50(800 credit score. ) I do not regret it. rent is already way higher than our mortgage. All the people who called us dumb are still wasting money on rent.

  17. YoungDreezee says:

This should have been illegal. This is what happens when Fannie and Freddie are under gov conservatorship. None of this was happening when the Fannie and Freddie was part gov and part public entities. Check the data, for real

  19. Lorenzo Were says:

Well, it's a capitalist market economy…supply and demand. Either America is capitalist free market economy and the landlords just doing whats right for them, or America is a hybrid economy and the government can step in and help the tax payers

  20. John Cox says:

This called getting screwed. Even if you can afford the rent you are paying over 50% of your check per year just to live not counting basic bills like water, electricity, cable and internet.
Why not everybody leave the city and make it where no one wants to rent. Then the real estate market would crash.

  21. Conservative Vegan Prepper says:

Landlords set the price, but tenant decide what the market price they are willing or able to pay. Most people have budgets for rents based on their salaries

  30. Isabella Florentina says:

As long as the term of the lease was honored what is the problem? The contract was fulfilled. This is happening all over the country. You got a good deal during the pandemic. Doesn't mean it's going to last forever. If you don't like rent hikes then buy a house. If you can't afford to buy in New York then move somewhere cheaper. Life is all about choices and tradeoffs. I'm so tired of hearing these entitled people thinking everything should be free for them.

  32. Anthony Meeks says:

It’s incredible as a 24 year old watching the government running my country attempt to help its people during a global crisis, switch leadership in the middle of said crisis, and said new leadership then proceeding to swipe those the crisis crippled under the rug of “economic inflation” while the dust settles. It’s heinous and I dare say criminal. As an American, I feel abandoned by my leadership.
