US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has become the most senior US politician to visit Taiwan in 25 years, despite China warning that Washington would “pay the price” if she visited the island.
Beijing warned it would respond to any potential visit from Pelosi, who has not been backed by the White House to visit Taiwan.
Taiwan is a self-ruled island, but claimed by China, which sees it as a breakaway province.

You know hyprocrits constantly say Taiwan is a separate country but somehow their own country acknowledges one China policy. Do you know why? Because when communist China established diplomatic country with the west in the 70s, over 80% Taiwanese thought they were Chinese nationals.
I am sorry but you can't have the cake and eat it, either recognise the one China policy, or formally recognise Taiwan as an Independent country, and dump and cut off all trades and diplomatic relationship with China like what the west has done to Russia. To the people commenting on how this was a “bold move”, this was a selfish and stupid move. This was a move to divert the internal issues within the states to other regions, shifting the public’s attention away from their own society’s issues. I am no fan of the Chinese CCP, however, I cannot think of an issue the US is so wrong headed about as Taiwan. I lived in China for 7 years. I can say that there were always some issues that Chinese disagreed with the CCP on however, on the issue of Taiwan all Chinese in China agree, Taiwan is China. In fact, post WWII the US recognized this fact by returning Japanese controlled Taiwan back to China. So in fact the US already acknowledged what it now wants to disavow.
It is funny that the jingoistic posters here are claiming China bluffed. Did Putin bluff? Putin warned the US about NATO eastern movement for 20 years and about Ukraine for 8 years. Finally, Putin made good on his promise about not crossing the Ukraine red line. Now Ukraine is losing and the economic sanctions have totally boomeranged on the West. China has been watching. I do not think the Chinese are going to have the same patience as the Russians. They might wait and see if this evil band of neo-con/neo-liberals get unseated in the next US election; that is if Taiwan does not declare independence in which case war will follow.
