Mullen, which has been showing prototypes for several years, got a head start within the EV business by acquiring the assets of the previous CODA EV company. Based in California, CODA briefly entered the market with a Chinese-made automobile and a giant investment in battery management technology. A version of the CODA automobile called the Mullen 700e was shown in 2014. CODA’s founder Kevin Czinger now leads Divergent and Czinger Vehicles.
What else can we know concerning the Mullen FIVE? It has a 120-kilowatt-hour battery, but company engineers say a solid-state polymer battery of 150 kilowatt-hours is within the works for the automobile’s second generation. With that one, it could have 600 miles of range, and testing is ready to start in 2025. The electrical motors are from Germany’s Hofer Powertrain. Two of those motors mounted on the rear axle will yield 300 kilowatts of power, but customers can even get a 3rd motor on the front axle so as to add one other 150 kilowatts.
The starting price for the Mullen FIVE is $55,000. Reservations require a refundable $100 deposit. Initial reservation holders are promised a special and unique trim package.
