Solar is much like graphene…. it can do almost anything but get out of the lab. It seems every year since the late 70s I have heard about some innovation or breakthrough in solar, but I never see it show up in real life.

Actually I would put them on my roof. In Europe, government taxes solar panels. Obviously we don't want to be in the business of financing government, so let's do this

Few realities with solar: Doesn't obviously work at night which is when the highest energy loads occur generally in homes, STILL requires fossil fuels in production (coke from coal).

IF solar is used to say replenish or conserve hydro lake generation for example by pumping the water back into a lake you then you may have night time storage solved. This is why ALL solar should go to replenishing the overall "grid" generation.

HUGE Wind turbines are not a good solution simply because they are made from fossil fuel composites you CANNOT recycle (yet) so old turbine blades actually just get buried to remove the bad image association. FACT

  25. James Smith says:

Why not just license the "organic semiconductor" coating to window manufacturers? Or is the basis for the patent = window + coating ? I do actually really like this idea of filtering useful visible light and diverting the non-visible to generate power.

  27. Nigel Langsford says:

You will never run your fridge with window power not possible. Solar can run small things for short times, few cloudy days and no battery storage and wind only works if you are in windy climate or close to water. Many of these people live in a dream

  28. Fred Frond says:

Wow they have buildings under test. If it is economically viable this could be the next Tesla. Or if not the next Theranos.

Ahhh yes, the solar con. Sure we can use battery packs that cost as much as a car that need to replaced every 5 years. Energy efficient yet never wallet efficient. Failed yet again.

I am from Chile and the amount of damage this con is doing to my country will be talked about by historians.

BS most homes have eves to keep the hot sun out of the house if you take away the eves the window based solar wouldn’t be able to produce enough energy to cool the heating from the sun . Just improve the solar shingles made by many companies already like GAF timberline and Tesla
