The Jets are changing their organizational reporting structure with the hires of Aaron Glenn as coach and Darren Mougey as general manager.
Each men will report back to owner Woody Johnson.
Mougey can have control of the 53-man roster, but won’t be Glenn’s boss.
The Jets have gone backwards and forwards over the past decade or so between a structure where each men report back to Johnson and one where the coach reports to the GM.
Robert Saleh reported to Joe Douglas within the previous regime.
“We’ve gone backwards and forwards,” Johnson said. “They’ll each come consult with me.”
It appears like Glenn has more juice because he was hired first. He was involved in Mougey’s second interview last week. At one point Monday, Johnson referred to Mougey as Glenn’s “sidekick.”
Mougey said he didn’t think it was odd for the team to rent the coach before the GM.
“I believe you’ve actually seen it happening an increasing number of,” Mougey said. “I don’t consider it like that. I believe they each [searches] had their processes. There was a variety of dialogue throughout the method with each parties, too.”
Glenn was hesitant to debate any current Jets players, saying he desires to take time to guage all of them.
But he did have familiarity with cornerback Sauce Gardner after evaluating him through the 2022 draft process because the Lions defensive coordinator.
Glenn, a Pro Bowl cornerback himself, said he recognizes Gardner’s talent.
“He was a rattling good player,” Glenn said of the draft process. “That’s why he’s made the Pro Bowl when he’s been here. What he did last 12 months, we’re within the technique of that. If there’s issues, we’ll fix that. The thing is he got here here as a Pro Bowler. We expect him to depart as a Pro Bowler.”
Glenn was asked what he wants the identity of the Jets offense to be.
“We’re going to be Latest York Jets,” Glenn said. “As you see us play, you’ll find a way to see the identity at that time. I at all times say family business stays in house, so I’m not going to let that outside this constructing. Our players are going to know what our identity goes to be and also you’re going to search out out by the best way we play.”
Jets DT Quinnen Williams was named to the Pro Bowl Games as a substitute for Chiefs star Chris Jones.
