Italy has a recent face in its national politics that is being in comparison with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the favored Democrat lawmaker stateside.

Elly Schlein was elected because the center-left party Partito Democratico (PD) leader earlier this month — the primary female to get the job. Born in Switzerland to an Italian mother and an American father, she became a lawmaker within the European Parliament for PD in 2014.

Earlier in her political profession, she volunteered within the 2008 Obama campaign, when Barack Obama faced off against John McCain. She returned to the Obama campaign 4 years later to coach recent volunteers.

Italian politics, similar to in lots of other nations, is commonly related to older men. But the image is likely to be changing, with Rome electing the primary female prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, in October.

“I remember wondering on the time whether I actually wanted my daughter to grow up in that environment,” Erik Jones, professor on the European University Institute in Florence, told CNBC in regards to the time when Silvio Berlusconi served as Italy’s prime minister.

“We’re very removed from that kind of objectification of girls today. That’s something we must always all have fun, even when there remains to be more to be done. Giorgia Meloni and Elly Schlein are emblematic of that change,” he added.

Data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development showed that female political representation accounts for under 33.8% of its member nations. In Italy, the number is barely lower at 32.3%.

Meloni and Schlein hold the highest two jobs in Italian politics but they’ve entirely different political beliefs.

“I’m Giorgia, I’m a lady, I’m a mother, I’m a Christian!” This was one in all Meloni’s principal lines through the campaign in 2022.

Schlein, in an interview with the Latest York Times, said she didn’t understand how being a lady, a mother and a Christian helps Italians.

“I’m a lady. I really like one other woman. I’m not a mother, but I’m not less of a lady for this,” Schlein said in the identical interview.

In previous remarks, Schlein said she desires to tax the wealthy, work closely with trade unions, push for environmental and feminist policies, and support gay and immigrant rights.

Conservative media in Italy have dubbed her “CommunistElly” and criticized her “wealthy” upbringing in Switzerland.

Schlein’s team was not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC Wednesday.

“Meloni has ceaselessly boasted about her being the primary female Prime Minister while the left has not been capable of produce the identical end in a decade-long control of the parliament. Now things may change with Elly Schlein,” Matteo Winkler, professor of law at H.E.C. Paris, said via email.
