“Pleased Birthday, dear Johnboy!”

Grateful Dead founding member Bob Weir placed on a special shoutout to Dead & Company band member John Mayer for his forty fifth birthday.

Weir, 75, who’s been on tour together with his band Bob Weir & the Wolf Bros, was playing at The Warfield in San Francisco, California — 10 minutes away from the Iconic Ashbury Street, where the Grateful Dead was founded 67 years ago.

“Well, what we’re gonna must do is everybody, everybody, to assist me on this one,” Weir told the gang, “We’re gonna sing Pleased Birthday to a man named John Mayer.”

The gang erupted into cheers when hearing Mayers name, followed by a singing heartfelt Pleased Birthday that left the venue shaking.

In 2015, Mayer joined Dead & Company, filling the role of rock music icon Jerry Garcia, who died in 1994.

Mayer, who was friendly with Weir before joining the revived jam band, was invited to affix the band as their lead guitarist and vocalist when Mayer was searching for something different out of his musical profession.

“When Grateful Dead music found me, it was the right moment,” Mayer said in a 2016 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, “For me, [Grateful Deads music] rekindled the colour of music.”

Dead & Company was formed by three of the surviving members of the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir, and drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart.

The band also features bassist Oteil Burbidge and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti.

Since 2015, the band has held an annual summer tour, playing some significant venues like Citi Field, Wrigley Field and Oracle Park, packed out with the Deadheads.

In September, the band announced on their social media page that the 2023 tour could be their final as a bunch.

Tickets for the band’s final tour went on sale this past Friday.
