Google announced a price increase for its YouTube TV subscription on Thursday. It’s rising from $65 per 30 days to $73 per 30 days starting in April, in response to an email sent to subscribers Thursday.
YouTube TV is Google’s cable substitute. It provides access to live TV and cable channels, delivered through a web connection.
“As content costs have risen and we proceed to take a position in the standard of our service, we’re updating our price to maintain bringing you the most effective possible service,” the corporate said in the e-mail to subscribers.
Google’s move to hike the value of its over-the-air subscription for cord cutters comes after several competing online streaming services have also raised the quantity they charge, including services from Disney, Apple and HBO.
In December, YouTube TV secured rights to the NFL’s “Sunday Ticket” package, which is able to allow it to sell a bundle of out-of-market NFL games that do not air on local TV to subscribers across the country.
YouTube can pay about $2 billion per yr for the package, CNBC reported, which had several other bidders including Apple and Disney. Google hasn’t announced pricing for its “Sunday Ticket” bundle, however it cost $80 per 30 days under its previous owner, DirecTV.
Google may also lower the value of an add-on to access higher-resolution 4K streams from $20 per 30 days to $10 per 30 days, in response to the e-mail.
