DENVER — Just when one other night of anguish with RISP appeared able to spell R.I.P. for the Mets, a wounded star got here to the rescue.
Francisco Lindor forged aside the team’s ugly performance with runners in scoring position by delivering a pinch-hit, two-run double within the ninth inning that provided the margin of victory in a 4-2 win over the Rockies at Coors Field.
Lindor, who missed a second straight start after sustaining a broken right pinky toe in Los Angeles, emerged from the dugout with two outs within the ninth and smashed a shot to right field that brought in Juan Soto and Pete Alonso.
The Mets, who won for the sixth time in eight games, survived a 2-for-15 performance with runners in scoring position.
Soto singled with one out to start the go-ahead rally, and Alonso, who had delivered a giant hit earlier, walked before Jeff McNeil was retired.
With Tyrone Taylor due up, Lindor was called to pinch hit and jumped on the second pitch he saw from Zach Agnos.
The Mets caught a break within the eighth, when Jordan Beck stopped at third base on Thairo Estrada’s double off Ryne Stanek that Soto had difficulty fielding in right field.
After a walk to Hunter Goodman loaded the bases with no person out, Ryan McMahon hit a line drive to Brett Baty, who tagged out Beck retreating to 3rd.
Stanek struck out Brenton Doyle to flee the inning.
