Ex-Recent Yorkers who’ve fled to Florida say they haven’t any regrets after ditching high taxes and crime for a sunnier, cheaper and safer lifestyle.
A relentless “escape from Recent York” has hammered town as greater than 125,000 residents left for Florida between 2018 and 2022 and took nearly $14 billion in income with them, in line with a brand new study from the nonpartisan Residents Budget Commission.
Alex Taub, cofounder of entertainment tech startup Goblintown, relocated to Miami together with his wife and two young children from the Upper West Side of Manhattan in July 2020 through the lockdowns – and said rent also was a significant factor.
“People thought we were crazy after we were telling them this nevertheless it just began getting an increasing number of bleak in Recent York,” Taub told The Post. “For a similar price that we were paying [for a two-bedroom apartment] in Recent York, we were getting a five-bedroom, four-bathroom house with a pool and a backyard.”
The CBC’s report noted that wealthy Recent Yorkers have left in droves, with the roughly 26,000 individuals who moved from Recent York to Miami-Dade County holding a per-capita income of over $266,000.
Taub, a lifelong Recent Yorker who was energetic in town’s tech scene, said he previously would have considered it “blasphemous” to depart, but has been won over by the work-life balance and lower taxes.
“Lots of friends have moved down here, so much people in tech, lots of people in business. The individuals who stayed are the individuals with kids,” Taub said. “I’ve never worked harder in my life but I do know that at 5 o’clock today I can jump within the pool with my kids and rejoice,” he added.
Bryan Goldberg, CEO of Bustle Media, said South Florida “consists of dozens of small towns with accessible, sane leaders who work hard to enhance our lives.”
“I can get on the phone with the Miami Beach mayor at any time, and so can any of my neighbors,” he added. “Once one experiences this kind of relationship with their government, it’s not possible to return to the Kafkaesque NYC experience.”
Some relocators are retired “snowbirds” – who fly down south to Florida to flee harsh Recent York winters – making the move everlasting, which happens yearly.
An even bigger shift took place through the pandemic, when Recent Yorkers seized on low cost rents in Florida to work remotely, in line with luxury retail consultant Melanie Holland. Many found they enjoyed the sun outside with their children and got hooked.
“Why do I need to pay Recent York state or Recent York City taxes once I walk out my door and there’s a homeless person, or my Walgreens is shut down due to theft?” a lot of Holland’s clients told her.
These transplants “hate what Recent York City has turn into” – complaining of crime and the stench of weed, she said.
While many miss Recent York’s energy, there’s no turning back after going through the trouble of selling their apartments and wrangling with the IRS to acquire Florida residency, Holland added.
David Feingold, the Miami-based CEO of Broadstreet Global, said he has a minimum of 20 people in his organization who’ve put in a request to relocate from Recent York City to South Florida within the last 18 months.
“Taxes and weather have existed because the starting of time in Recent York,” Feingold told The Post. But what modified within the last 18 months is the “cumulative effect” of crime and immigration, he added.
Feingold said that not one of the individuals who moved from Recent York to South Florida have regretted their decision.
“That’s the amazing thing — I assumed I might get complaints in regards to the lack of art and culture which you can only find in Recent York,” he said.
As an alternative, the Recent York transplants have “bought themselves a ship, a bag of golf clubs and so they have been in a position to find alternative outlets for his or her time.” Feingold added: “People have offset what they lost by leaving Recent York.”
David Goldberg, a general partner at Miami-based Alpaca VC, said he and his family initially moved to Florida in August 2020 for what they saw as “type of like a ‘try before you purchase’” – and never left.
“It’s a significantly higher place for me and my family to live from a private and family perspective,” Goldberg said.
While good weather and no state income tax are each positives, Goldberg said Miami has a singular cultural identity that has grown as town evolved right into a budding tech hub.
“I believe we’ve all recruited a bunch of individuals to return down here,” he added.
