AMD said it sees a possibility to develop a man-made intelligence chip specifically for the Chinese market to comply with U.S. export curbs, in a move that might follow rivals Nvidia and Intel.

Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, said on an earnings call late Tuesday that China is an “vital” market and that the semiconductor giant desires to be fully compliant with U.S. export controls.

“As we take into consideration actually the accelerator market, our plan is to after all be fully compliant with U.S. export controls but we do imagine there’s a possibility to develop products for our customer set in China that’s in search of AI solutions and we’ll proceed to work in that direction,” Su said.

Accelerator chips are the sort of semiconductors required to coach huge amounts of knowledge for artificial intelligence applications.

AMD is gearing up to extend production of its MI300 chip which it’s positioning as a rival to Nvidia’s graphics processing units used for AI training. Nvidia dominates the market but AMD is hoping to challenge it with its latest chip.

Earlier this yr, the U.S. government restricted Nvidia from selling its A100 and H100 chips to China. The H100 is one among Nvidia’s key AI chips. Nvidia decided to create a chip with tweaks to the H100’s specifications that complied with the export curbs.

Intel also made a modified version of its its Gaudi 2 AI chips for the Chinese market.

China stays a lucrative marketplace for U.S. chipmakers, particular in AI where there are few homegrown alternatives to the likes of Nvidia.

For AMD, lots is riding on its MI300 AI chip because it looks to tackle Nvidia. The corporate is expecting the chip to assist it rapidly grow its data center business for the remaining of the yr.

Su said AMD is taking a look at around 50% growth within the second half of the yr versus the primary half in its data center business, partially because of the brand new AI chip.
