Pete Alonso hasn’t missed a game since 2023, but that streak was in jeopardy on Sunday.
The Mets first baseman was absent from the starting lineup against the Reds with a right-hand contusion — X-rays were negative, based on manager Carlos Mendoza — and it was unclear if Alonso could be available off the bench.
Mark Vientos began at first base in Alonso’s absence. It was Vientos’ third profession start and fifth appearance on the position.
Mendoza said he became aware of Alonso’s discomfort following his second at-bat on Saturday. The manager called it “impact” discomfort that worsened.

Alonso, who owns an .892 OPS, played 162 games last season for Mets, and entering Sunday had appeared in all 99 this 12 months.
Alonso’s 353 consecutive games played entering Sunday was the longest streak in franchise history.
