The Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers playoff game has been postponed until Monday afternoon as a result of winter weather, Latest York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Saturday.
The sport was originally scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, Latest York.
“I have been in communication with @NFL commissioner Roger Goodell regarding the damaging conditions in Buffalo this weekend. In consultation with our emergency response teams, @BuffaloBills leadership, and the NFL, the Bills game shall be postponed to 4:30 pm Monday,” she said in a post on X.
The NFL and the Bills said in a statement that the postponement was within the “best interest of public safety.”
Western Latest York is anticipated to be hit with a winter storm starting around 6 p.m. Saturday. Hochul said it could be intense and said it could possibly be essentially the most “dangerous weather conditions on this area because the catastrophic blizzard of 1 12 months ago.”
Forecasters said the storm shall be at its “fiercest” Sunday afternoon, the governor told reporters at a news briefing.
“And that’s the reason I’m pleased to announce that within the interest of keeping each Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh fans protected … the NFL has agreed with our assessment that we’d like to postpone tomorrow’s playoff game,” Hochul said.
“It’s all a component of our critical effort to maintain Latest Yorkers, motorists and fans protected from this widely unpredictable storm,” she added.
In a post on X, the governor warned that travel shall be “extremely dangerous” and a full travel ban was implemented in Erie County, where Buffalo is situated, starting at 9 p.m. Saturday.
The sport marks the primary round of the NFL playoffs and is the largest game of the season for each teams with the winner being one step closer to playing within the Super Bowl.
