It’s déjà vu for some Americans on the lookout for the newest Covid-19 vaccines.
Certain individuals who were lucky enough to snag an appointment for the newest formulation are receiving cancellation notices or showing as much as learn there’s not a dose available for them. Some are being told they should pay greater than $100 out of pocket because their insurance provider is not covering the shots yet.
Nearly all of CVS locations are in a position to honor scheduled appointments, but delivery delays to some stores are causing them to reschedule shots, a CVS spokesperson said in a press release. Most Walgreens stores have enough supply for existing appointments and more slots are being made available because the shots are available in, a spokesperson said.
Vaccine manufacturers Moderna and Pfizer said they’ve shipped thousands and thousands of doses for the reason that latest versions were approved last week, they usually have plenty more able to go. Moderna in a press release Thursday specifically said it shipped those vaccines to distributors and that it could work with these middlemen to make sure its shots reach pharmacies and other providers.
A representative for Cencora said the distributor recently began to receive the vaccines and ship them out to customers. Representatives for 2 other distributors — McKesson and Cardinal Health — didn’t immediately reply to CNBC’s request for comment.
The brand new round of Covid-19 vaccines is the primary where the federal government is just not playing a number one role. Previously, the federal government purchased the shots and distributed them to pharmacies, doctor’s offices and other providers.
Now, those providers are buying the vaccines from distributors or directly from manufacturers.
“This can be a whole latest territory with these updated Covid vaccines,” said Nate Rockers, who owns Rockers Pharmacy in Paola, Kansas.
Providers for the primary time have to contemplate how many individuals will want the shots. Now that they are buying them, they’re on the hook for any unused doses. That would create some delays along the best way, said Theresa Tolle, who owns Bay Street Pharmacy in Sebastian, Florida.
Rockers expects the method to grow to be more seamless over time but in addition recognizes people trying to find the shots want them now. That leaves pharmacies like his fielding calls and explaining they cannot administer shots yet in the event that they desired to.
Tolle said the unprecedented nature of the rollout is creating speed bumps.
“The issue is we’ve got spoiled individuals who have gotten it because it has been so available every other time,” Tolle said, adding most individuals do not understand there’s an enormous difference with distribution this time around.
It appears even harder to search out the Covid vaccines for kids.
CVS said it expects to begin receiving those doses late this week and Walmart anticipates they’ll arrive after the adult vaccines are available in. A notice on Walgreens’ website said appointments for kids under 12 years old won’t start until Friday, Sept. 29.
