Friday, January 6 

• Claremont’s holiday tree recycling program continues through Thursday, January 12. Leave your holiday tree on the curb by 6 a.m. in your regular collection day and town will take the tree. All ornaments, lights, tinsel, stands, etc., have to be removed prior to select up and trees over six feet tall have to be cut in half. Flocked trees is not going to be accepted and ought to be placed within the black trash container. For information call (909) 399-5431.

 

• The Claremont Senior Computer Club hosts a free technology assistance lab from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on the Joslyn Center, 660 N. Mountain Ave., Claremont. The course is open to seniors who need assistance with their laptops, tablets, phones, or other devices. Computers will even be available. For details, visit ci.claremont.ca.us.

 

• The war and existentialism book club meets the primary Friday of each month from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the Joslyn Center, 660 N. Mountain Ave., Claremont. January’s book of debate is “The Master and Margarita,” by Mikhail Bulgakov. Attendance is free but pre-registration is required by calling (909) 399-5488.

 

Saturday, January 7

• The Los Angeles County Public Library will hold a free virtual creator talk featuring Recent York Times bestselling creator Namina Forna, creator of “The Gilded Ones,” at 11 a.m. Forna will discuss her second installment within the series, “The Merciless Ones.” For more information or to RSVP, go to visit.lacountylibrary.org/event/7725463.

 

• The general public is invited to a community appreciation party hosted by California District 25 Senator Anthony Portantino at 115 N Artsakh Ave., Glendale, from 1 to 4 p.m. Meet state staff, discuss legislative priorities for the brand new yr and luxuriate in refreshments and entertainment. • Stop by the Claremont Helen Renwick Library, 208 N. Harvard Ave., at 2 p.m. for the primary On the Same Page event of the brand new yr, “When Wildfires Hit Home: The Personal Accounts.” Three Claremont residents: Susan Kullman, Penny Garris, and Judith Favor, will share stories of their neighborhoods and houses going up in flames. • That is the ultimate week to see “Celebrating Filipino American History” within the Reading Room Gallery on the Claremont Colleges Library, 800 N. Dartmouth Ave. The exhibit, which closes Friday, January 13, celebrates Filipino-American heritage through various mediums. Viewings are by appointment only Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon, and 1 to 5 p.m. The library is closed Saturday and Sunday. • Starting and intermediate line dancing classes, at 9:15 and 10:30 a.m., respectively, meet on the Joslyn Center, 660 N. Mountain Ave., Claremont every Wednesday. • This week’s movie matinee on the Joslyn Center, 660 N. Mountain Ave., is “Respect” (2021), a biopic that follows the rise of Aretha Franklin’s profession from a baby singing in her father’s church’s choir to international superstardom. Saturday, January 14

• The Claremont Helen Renwick Library, 208 N. Harvard Ave., will hold a free Chinese paper cutting course today from 2 to three p.m. ahead of the Chinese Recent Yr, which is Sunday, January 22. • On the second Saturday of the month, the Friends of the Pomona Public Library hold a book sale on the patio of the Pomona Public Library, 625 S. Garey Ave. The sale is held from noon to 4 p.m. in support of the group and library. For more details email friendspomonalibrary@gmail.com.

 

• At 4 p.m. local creator Judith Wright Favor will read excerpts from her 2021 book, “Friending Rosie: Respect on Death Row,” at a free and open to the general public reading on the Claremont Forum Bookshop, 586 W. First St. The book explores Favor’s friendship with death row inmate Rosie Alfaro. Forum volunteers will even read from letters to the Prison Library Project from through the years.
