The world’s first fully working “sand battery”, which can store green power for months at a time, has been installed by Finnish researchers.
The developers said this could solve the problem of year-round supply, a major issue for green energy.
Using low-grade sand, the device is charged up with heat made from cheap electricity from solar or wind.
The sand stores the heat at around 500C, which can then warm homes in winter when energy is more expensive.

I saw an interview of Polar Night energy on youtube. Great idea heating sand which stays hot for a long long time.
Nice! maybe combine it with an organic rankine cycle to get electricity? It's not super efficient, but sand is cheap and with scale ups of renewables, lots of renewably generated energy is going to waste in european countries with large renewable generation capacities anyway.
What particular sand mix is used? And what insulation type? With fresnel lens heating, u could heat sand without electricity.
I think that Sahara will supply in the future all the energy needed in Europe, Africa and Asia, once we find out the technology to capture all its power. European countries should intensify together their brain power to find solutions!
You could regenerate electricity by using the heat from sand as an energy source for electricity generating steam turbine.
A very important missing info here: what type of sand does it use? There are literal sand wars going on in the world because we are running short on sand appropriate for making cement. So unless these batteries can use any type of sands (like those in deserts which can't be used for concrete), I do not see this going world wide without causing wars over limited concrete-sand supplies. I really hope they work with simple sand 🙂

As usual with videos like this, there is a crucial detail that is left out, in this case it is the type of insulation used. What type of insulation can prevent heat loss from sand at 500 C in below zero weather over a period of weeks or months? OK, maybe it is proprietary, but the report could have told us that.
Obviously it is inefficient to transform a high quality energy source (electricity) to a low quality (heat). But one scenario to get to fully sustainable energy production is to overbuild wind and solar to cover as much energy demand as possible. But then you will also have periods where you produce too much and then this is a great solution to at least not let the electricity go to waste.
can we put these underground or would that cause problems? if we can do that it would make them even better because surface area is a problem especially in cities. and i reckon these need to be fairly massive if we want them to make a difference.

Electricity to heat is very inefficient, solar to electricity is very inefficient. If you want to use solar for heat then to store in sand is a good idea but harvest the heat from the sun with mirrors and heat the sand like that. It could also work to store access "green" energy as heat in this way as it would just be wasted anyway.
Bad report
1- Deliberately misusing word battery to catch the attention. A battery is something that stores and returns electricity not heat.
2- The most crucial part of this technology was not even mentioned. and that is HOW the heat is not lost from this body of sand for months. The point is not in the sand, it is in the insulation technique/technology, which was totally overlooked.
What is the problem with generating electricity from rain? A lot of fans can be installed as the rain falls everywhere. Fans can be placed on top of the house, in the field and in the sea. If the number of fans is increased, more power can be produced. If the generator is movable, it can be moved after the rainy season.
