Salman Rushdie, the author whose writing led to death threats from Iran in the 1980s, was attacked Friday as he was about to give a lecture in western New York.
An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man storm the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and begin punching or stabbing Rushdie as he was being introduced. The 75-year-old author was pushed or fell to the floor, and the man was restrained.
Rushdie was quickly surrounded by a small group of people who held up his legs, presumably to send more blood to his chest.
His condition was not immediately known.
Hundreds of people in the audience gasped at the sight of the attack and were then evacuated.
Rushdie’s book “The Satanic Verses” has been banned in Iran since 1988, as many Muslims consider it to be blasphemous. A year later, Iran’s late leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, or edict, calling for Rushdie’s death.

فَإِذَا انسَلَخَ الأَشهُرُ الحُرُمُ فَاقتُلُوا المُشرِكينَ حَيثُ وَجَدتُموهُم وَخُذوهُم وَاحصُروهُم وَاقعُدوا لَهُم كُلَّ مَرصَدٍ ۚ فَإِن تابوا وَأَقامُوا الصَّلاةَ وَآتَوُا الزَّكاةَ فَخَلّوا سَبيلَهُم ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفورٌ رَحيمٌ
Transliteration
fa-ʾidhā nsalakha l-ʾashhuru l-ḥurumu fa-qtulū l-mushrikīna ḥaythu wajadtumūhum wa-khudhūhum wa-ḥṣurūhum wa-qʿudū lahum kulla marṣadin fa-ʾin tābū wa-ʾaqāmū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ʾātawu z-zakāta fa-khallū sabīlahum ʾinna llāha ghafūrun raḥīmun
Translation
Then, when the sacred months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them, capture them and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every ambush. But if they repent, and maintain the prayer and give the zakāt, then let them alone. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهورِ عِندَ اللَّهِ اثنا عَشَرَ شَهرًا في كِتابِ اللَّهِ يَومَ خَلَقَ السَّماواتِ وَالأَرضَ مِنها أَربَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ۚ ذٰلِكَ الدّينُ القَيِّمُ ۚ فَلا تَظلِموا فيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُم ۚ وَقاتِلُوا المُشرِكينَ كافَّةً كَما يُقاتِلونَكُم كافَّةً ۚ وَاعلَموا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ المُتَّقينَ

ʾinna ʿiddata sh-shuhūri ʿinda llāhi thnā ʿashara shahran fī kitābi llāhi yawma khalaqa s-samāwāti wa-l-ʾarḍa minhā ʾarbaʿatun ḥurumun dhālika d-dīnu l-qayyimu fa-lā taẓlimū fīhinna ʾanfusakum wa-qātilū l-mushrikīna kāffatan ka-mā yuqātilūnakum kāffatan wa-ʿlamū ʾanna llāha maʿa l-muttaqīna
Translation
Indeed the number of months with Allah is twelve months in Allah’s Book, the day when He created the heavens and the earth. Of these, four are sacred. That is the upright religion. So do not wrong yourselves during them.1 Fight all the polytheists, just as they fight you all, and know that Allah is with the Godwary.

Don't blame a whole country, groups of people or involve this horrific event in anything like the nuclear deal. This seems to be about a guy, living in the US, who heard others were offended by the book, adopted those thoughts as his own & HIMSELF carried out his OWN actions. People are responsible for themselves despite whatever someone tells them to do! I purchased the book & couldn't follow the extreme detailed details. I doubt those offended could either. I wondered how the book titled, Satanic Verses, was offensive because its name made it seem like it would be. That, and a few sentences was about all I really understood – which frustrates me- so I'm offended also. I'm thankful I can tell you that. I will stop reading & let it go. No hard feelings. What is the punishment for blasphemy in Islam?
There is no punishment in Islam for blasphemy. No such punishment is prescribed in the Holy Quran, or in any of the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad(sa). Islam promotes the need for respect of all religions for the sake of peace in society, but it does not set out any punishment for blasphemy despite the offence it may cause people of faith.
We have evidence in the traditions of the Holy Prophet(sa) where Abdullah bin Ubayyee (Chief of the hypocrites) continuously abused the Prophet(sa), and opposed him severely in Madinah.
When he passed away, the Prophet(sa) stood to offer his funeral prayers but was asked by one of his companions, “O Allah’s Apostle! Do you offer the prayer for this man although he said so-and-so on such-and-such-a day?” and “that he is a hypocrite!”. The Prophet(sa) ignored his statements and continued to offer the funeral prayers of the dead man. (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Number 192)
The above example shows that the Prophet(sa) never ordered any punishment for anyone who insulted or abused him or God; on the contrary he went to pray for them that they be guided aright.
If somebody uses foul language against any holy person or teaching, Islam advises to keep away from such people as The Holy Qur’an says,
And when you see those who trifle with our signs then turn thou away from them until then engage in a discourse other than that and if Satan cause thee to forget then sit not, after recollection, with the unjust people. (Ch.6: V.69)
